Remove object from a video clip?

I´m trying to get a pancake to fly(making something for some kids), and I attached a line to my fake pancake. Made it fly, but I want to remove the lines. It is possible to do that.

I really don´t know what to search for, so Youtube isn´t much help.

Does this remove object have a name?

It's a pretty common effects/compositing technique. Look around for "Wire Removal".

If you don't mind spending a little money, ($50) the object remover filter here:

www.coremelt.com/products/slicex.html

is fairly awesome. :-) Theres a tutorial video on the web page.

You can use the Rotobrush in After Effects

I'd say that today it is much, much easier to get the pancake shot on a green screen, then composite it onto your scene. Faster, easier, cleaner, cheaper. Or go to the Blender group on FB and get someone to CGI a pancake for you. Most of those guys are looking for 1st time projects and will do it free (or real cheap).

Well, its quite difficult to remove the wire attached to my pancake.

The pancake swelling on the pan, and it´s going to turn itself around. In order for me to that, I made a hole at the edge of the cake. I then attaching a hook to the wire which a then attaching to the hole in the cake.
When I´m turning the pancake with the wire, there´s a lot of movement to the wire. And that´s why I can´t get the wire to disappear.

The green screen advice sounds good. Just have to learn how to do it.

Does the CGI-guys on FB have some serious pro programs that us deadly people can´t afford? Or is it hard to learn?

3D modeling and animation is a very steep learning curve, no matter what app you use. I suggested the "Blander" group on FB as they use the OpenSource app "Blender". I'm learning Blender and Cheetah 3D at the moment (as well as several other apps), but not good enough to do what you want.

Someone here today just pointed out to me that we did something similar a few years ago and ended up doing a stop-motion animation using DSLR photos. Time consuming, but a lot of fun.

Green screen is easy, just light it correctly. Tons of info all over about it.

Took a look at the Blender-group. Interesting, but I thing I´ll put that on hold.
Want to try the green screen.

However, I need to remove the wire from the green screen before I apply it to my wanted background. And that´s where the problem kicks in. I can´t seem the remove the wire.

I´ll add a video of my turning of the pancake. Perhaps easier to understand.

And I don´t have a green screen, so I have to color a white sheet.

Slice X from Coremelt would work great for you. Basically you have to create a shape mask (or matte) to remove the wire. We do this as part of green screen all the time.

You don't normally key out the WHOLE frame of a green screen shot. You mask out what you don't need. Draw a mask that will hide all except what is absolutely necessary. Then key out the green. That way you don't have to worry about shadow spots, bad edges, etc.

Slice X lets you do very complex shape masks, and keyframe them to move around as you need them to. Again, you'd do this before applying the Key filter.

with 'green screen' people mostly associate gigantic green studios. but, you can use it vice versa, REVERSE GREEN SCREEN, here's a quick demo:

(yeah, the lil' fella's shadow doesn't work - hey, done in a minute)

the idea is: scene with and without subject. use green (or any other solid colour) tools to animate. I've seen people wearing green gloves, or, in Hollywood they do use these 'full body condoms'.

it gets a little tricky with lights and shadows - in my demo, the desk-lamp from top is sub-optimal .........

so, to move your pancake, you probably just need a green stick ....

yes, that's not the pro-attitude, but I'm the hobbyist, the no-budget-filmmaker here :woohoo:

Here´s the video I want to use.

All right, I´ll find a green something to attach to the pancake and try to edit it in FCPX.

If I get this right, the background clip and green screen clip has to have the same length of time?
In my case I only need it to be a picture of the same background?

I might sound like a heretic now, but the After .effects Rotobrush is a great tool for something like that. Shoot your scene without he pancake (a still image is sufficient), then just use the the Rotobrush to cut your string.

The 30 day trial should be long enough to pull that off.

a green wire would do so.

or just a much, much thinner piece of string ;)
(does the pancake weights a ton??)

a fishing line (these are incredible strong!).
or professional magicians use sewing-cotton in 'mouse grey' - almost invisible (used for the famous 'levitating a table tennis ball between the hands'-trick). within your cameras distance, such a string is absolutely invisible, beyond cam's resolution.

practicals are much more pratical than any CGI-artistry ....

I´m doing this at work, and I didn´t have any thinner wire than the one on the clip :)

hopefully, you're the boss in the company!

what's so nice about your recording, and is much better than any 3D generated stuff: the natural movement of the cake, it really 'cuddles' into the pan, that charm a marionette only has!

use a thinner string - no computers needed!

I can try After Effects. What does the full version cost?

It´s kind of a project on work, and I want to do it more advanced. So I ´m doing this when there´s room for it. Especially now, we don´t have much to do.

I can try with thinner string, but I really want to learn the green screen effect. And maybe without After Effects. FCPX cost some money, So I can´t imagine what my wallet says if I want to by After Effects as well.

'green-screen' is part of 12$-iMovie, and drop-dead-simple (for simple results).

the keyer in FCPX, or Motion5 (50$) is much more elaborated and allows 'fine tuning', when it comes to flying hair, shadows, green reflections on subjects shoulders etc etc .

AE is for a hobbyist (=me) absolute over-kill. not only its price, but its -zillion features! professionals, using it 8h/d, need years to get it to the ground.

color-key/green screen allows funny stuff, although you soon stumble into your hobbyist limits: a green screen, for people, needs roooooooom! and tons of light.

... I use my garden for it ;)

And the price is? Don´t like the Adobe-site...
How well does AF run on Mac OS X?

So what you are saying is that I can remove the string better with FCPX and Motion5 rather then green screen?
