I just turned off background rendering completely and tossed the render products of my current project. Last night while editing, I retimed a clip and it magically became a different part of the clip. Undo the timing, I get the original range. Crazy. Rather have slow/choppy (but not that bad) output without pre-rendering than this.

Next time, I'll note the date/time when I upgrade FCPx so I have a way to back out of the upgrade (hopefully) via Time Machine.

Fortunately generating the final output with Compressor seems to work. The funkiness I saw last night wasn't some turkey-induced nightmare :)

I am using 2 Motion-5 templates, one I made, one I didn't.

I'll file an entry on their feedback page. I get a little jaded with telling them due to my experience as an iOS developer, but some pretty high-end firings in the iOS camp followed by a survey to all developers that was crazy-detailed about what they are doing wrong has me thinking maybe there's a positive change in store for '13 :)

After more editing tonight with background rendering off (and render products deleted), I thought to point out one other trend.

I often retime clips to speed them up in my podcast. I've noticed that if I take a clip and retime it x8 faster, it works fine. If I then apply an effect (my own Motion-5 PIP effect) and hit playback, what I'm getting is a playback that is the same duration as the retimed clip should have been (45 seconds in this last case), but it is the first 45 seconds of the original clip in the event browser played at normal timing.

That's happened about 5 times tonight. I're restarted FCP in between.

Since I use a lot of retiming, perhaps that's why I'm having a bad time with 10.0.6

For me this issue seems to be entirely plug-in related, both built-in and third party. I can only get clean output when I run the edit without any effects. Text will work fine and colour corrections are fine.
I am now having to go to Share>Master file>Prores (various flavours) and then open up either Premier/AE/Resolve to do the effects work

Just use an Adjustment Layer! Place it above the clip, place the effects on that clip.
I have a free one you can download.

Thanks Ben. I haven't tried using an adjustment layer. I'll give it a go and see what happens.
btw, why is it pillar box red?

ok, fair enough...
Adjustment layer worked:) Thanks
Cool workaround if the edit is simple.
Sadly most aren't:(
