Well... Update! 
Opened FCPX today on my home machine, (was at work for the last few posts) opened a project, dropped the Trails filter on a clip and... same red square. So... looks like it's a bug. Will report it on the bug tracker (so I can attach logs and screen shots) Monday. Thanks for all the suggestions though. At least i have a nice new copy of X on my work machine.

I'm testing and can't replicate your bug. Any third party plugins installed on both machines by chance?

Nope. There are a ton on my work Mac Pro, but not a single one on my home iMac. :shrug:
Oh.. FWIW, the clip I tried it on at home is an AAC h264 1080p GoPro clip... so... 2 machines, 3 totally different media types, no common 3rd party plugins... Also as noted, it worked for a while on the first clip... very weird
