Using FCPX I was wandering if there is a benefit to work from media on single SSD external disk, versus ESATA raid. I am using LaCie d2 Thunderbolt & USB 3.0 and it works well. But since I work on very short projects, about 5 to ten minutes I thought it might be a good idea to use small SSD for one project at a time.

You have better performance on your RAID than with a single SSD, even on T'bolt.

I'm confused. You're using a LaCie D2, but you're asking about ESATA. That D2 via USB 3.0 or T'bolt will be as fast, if not faster than an ESATA connection. What Mac are you using?

.I am using the new MP I thought that a single SSD might be better option. Those external option are new to me since using mp 2006 to this day.

One more. The La Cie I use has single 3TB hard disk inside (sorry for this confusion), no raid. So I thought SSD Thunderbolt would be faster. If not what is SSD good for except as system disk.

As for T'bolt, a single SSD will be faster than a single HDD. An HDD RAID will be faster than a single SSD. But a single SSD will be very expensive and not give you nearly as much space as HDDs will. I'd go for a RAID, even a 2 drive RAID over a single SSD, personally. Just to get better performance and storage space for my dollar.

What type of video media are you using, and how large are your projects?

I make very short movies not longer than 10 minutes and with amount of overlay clips. Money is then not an issue for such short projects. 120 GB SSD would be enough, since I work only on one project at time. After f.But you have clarified a lot for me.
