Given that Prometheus has just his cinemas all over the world, I thought an effect that could simulate text dialogue with a computer might be useful - in the style of Alien, which hit screens 33 years ago.

There were scenes when crew members 'got inside' the ship's computer.

Hey alex. I was looking on your site and saw this generator. It said that I had to download a font and when I followed the link that you provided it said it was only for windows machine. I am on an iMac. How can I use this effect with out the font because it is a really cool generator. Thanks in advance for all your work and any advice you might have for me.

Once you are on the Ufont page, you will see three different downloading links. Click on the one saying "Download Centrum Light Regular [TTF File]". The font file will then automatically download to the Download folder on your Mac. Open your Download folder and click twice on the downloaded file (ufonts.com_centrum-light-regular.ttf). A small window will pop-up showing the font. Click on the "Install font" button at the bottom of the window and you're done.

Hi Alex. This looks like a nice effect. However, after downloading the plug-in I downloaded the Centrun Light font form the free uFont website. While unpacking the font my iMac displayed that the image has the malware virus: OSX.FkCodec.i.

When I click the 'Download Centrum Light Regular [TTF File]' link, I get a single .ttf file, not a .dmg

Do you know where the 'download.dmg' file came from?

Thanks wdevn for your post about a virus you found. I don't know if it was hosted at the site that hosted the font I linked to, so I took a closer look.

After examining the font file with more care I found that it had been pirated from the freefont.de website.

As I don't want to link my blog to pirated software I've modified the blog post and the effect to work with a paid version of the font by default.

It can work with any font on your system, but looks most like the sequences in Alien if you use 'Centrum Light' or 'Berthold City Light' or 'Bitstream Slabserif 711 Light.' The cheapest version is 'Centrum Light' from Fontspring.

Please note that to anyone who has already downloaded the font I linked to before that there is no virus built into the 'Centrum Light Regular' font or the link.

Yep! It came from a link I clicked on your site:

ufonts.com

It looks like your site now links to another site. BTW, how can another font be set? Is it possible to set another font?

The way that site is set up is they've set up a few big buttons marked 'Download' - these lead to other sites with .dmg files.

Sorry about that - when I initially searched for the font, found it on this site and used the numeric confirmation and clicked the .ttf link on the following page I wasn't taken to the wxdownload.com site where the download.dmg was hosted.

I found a free version of Centrum Light, hope is the same.

I've modified the effect to add a font selection and text scale control.

So do I now have to reinstall the plug-in?

Version 1.0 works fine - it's just that it uses a pirated font. It is up to you whether you still use it. You can choose a different font in the Text tab of the inspector.

Version 1.1 uses a paid version of the font by default and adds a horizontal scale control for the text.
