FCPX Smooth Cam Filter/Effect Anybody?

Ok so I know FCP 6 and FCP 7 were capable of having the "Smooth Cam" Filter/Effect but can somebody create one for FCPX? I don't have enough money for a tripod and when I move I have the slightest bit of the "shaky hand" if you know what I mean.
Hope you guys can help me out.
Thanks!

Hey there slidetackle2008,

FCPX will analyze your footage and automatically stabilize your image.
If the automatic stabilization isn't exactly what you want, you can modify on your own.

Just go to 30 seconds in this clip....

good luck!

Read the "Analyze for stabilization and rolling shutter" section of these user manual pages.

@slidetackle2008 Don't know what camera you're using but if it has a good optical image stabilization feature, turn it on. (usually defeats the purpose if the camera is on a tripod so if you ever get one, don't use OIS).

Secondly, I have used FCPX stabilization and found it to work pretty darn well. As the manual suggests, shorter clip segments will work better as it is just analyzing that section (which may not be correct for all parts of the entire clip). Beware, depending on settings in the filter, you may see a scale up of the video that reduces image resolution.

For my camera I am using a Sony Bloggie Handheld:
store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet...=8198552921666268179

And it does not seem to have a self-stabilizing feature except for taking photos.
When I enable the stabilizing feature, it makes my clips have a "jitter" effect and seems to make it worse. Any thoughts on what could be going wrong/I'm doing wrong? :/

Well, I actually also have a Bloggie that was given to me by my Bank as a reward. It records highly compressed H.264 and FCPX import gives you a .MP4 file. Depending on what purpose you are making videos, this is akin to filming with a cell phone...images can be so-so but really no control of anything.

But, having said that, I would recommend you set the recording for 720 60P. The only other options are 30P modes and those will stutter with any kind of quick movement. That camera also won't focus worth a darn in 30p modes and in 60p it's better but reacts sometimes when you don't want it to. If you can use a small monopod (you'll need an angle adapter to shoot 16:9 as the mounting hole puts it in a portrait mode) you'll get better results. You can always try to find something to set it on for stability, but free holding that thing is a bit of a challenge.

You probably have already found this out, but the zoom is all digital on that camera - no optical whatsoever. So, always leave it in the widest position and try to get closer to your subject. Even a small amount of zooming in looks terrible and pixelated when looking at the imported footage.

If you follow some of these tips, and reasonably manage any shaking, then FCPX stabilization will help to steady things. But take short shots, so FCPX doesn't try to analyze a long clip of erratic movement. Otherwise, be prepared to blade apart sections of the clip and stabilize them one by one.

Hope this helps ;-)

EDIT: changed above file type from .mov to .MP4
