My Dip to Background transition provides various options. As well as momentarily showing a solid colour between clips, there is an option to show a third clip or even the storyline below. There are flexible controls for the timing for both the outgoing clip and the incoming clip. This means you can configure a flash frame or a slow fade out followed by a quick fade in.
