Creating Sub-Clips Of Used Media

I follow several user forums of other NLE's to keep my self educated. I recently ran across a post in an Avid Media Composer group on Facebook. As of this writing there were 53 replies to this one simple question. I am blown away that MC can't do something so simple, in a simple way. I'll present three ways to find these used clips from a specific Project in FCPX, that are faster and easier than logging in to Facebook and reading through 53 posted replies. Then you decide which workflow you'd rather deal with…

not following 'other' NLE discussions, my first reaction, esp. on method 'smartfolders' was
"Hu, Mr Balser, this is sooo basics, worth calling it a 'tutorial'???"

... but, indeed, for 'other' NLEs some sort of a challange!

I'm an FCPX-kid, I can not help ...

Does FCPX create such old useless things as a sub clip??? :woohoo: :woohoo: :P

This one feature of FCPX is well worth the price of admission, the beauty of ranges, I guess technically in some obscure way a range might be a subclip, that is a clip from a master clip, but it is not in so many ways.

I am not surprised that Avid/Adobe might not do this as well as FCPX, I watched a few introductory tutorials on the Adobe website, and was well confused, for a 2016 NLE, it seems to be a confused mess of screens, and tools, almost randomly designed, the way you have to find the right section to place a window, really, is that the best the idiots at PPro can muster in 2016???

Again I question the addiction to pain, PPro users must love pain and frustration, they must love confusion and stress, why why carry on with something from 1990? I don't understand how with the level of understanding I have of FCPX how PPro makes any logical sense!!

Just read the Avid question on Facebook, and what??? Decompose, try this trick, EDL to TAB...I have never used or seen an Avid since 2001, but that just sounds like way too much like hard work, and I am very allergic to hard work, I am completely bone idle, and anything more than 2 steps, is just way too much like hard work...Avid, really is this the very very best you can develop???

Yes Karsten, it is super basic. But, if you could see some of the emails and messages I get weekly asking for help, and they're all super basic. Rarely do I get an "advanced" question. Because by that point, the editor can figure it out, or knows where to get the info (user manual, here, etc).

A range is a sub-clip, just using it as the digital representation that it is, and not as a separate physical entity which it isn't. And calling it what it is, using it as a digital representation based on metadata, gives us so much flexibility and ease of use.

Those who say FCPX dumbed down editing are hypocrites for using a computer in the first place. Tell your business accountant to never use a computer, and go back to pencil and paper ledgers. Technology is here to make things easier, faster. Technology should evolved to the point that the end user doesn't ever notice any technology.

Thanks for the good words, y'all. Now that the tv show I was working is on hold, I'm going to be pumping out a lot of training in both written and video formats. And getting more music composing time in, too. May will see the finalcutprox.guru web site really explode and evolve.

Yeah, when I see such a convoluted thread for something super simply in FCPX, I can't resist doing a tutorial article. HA!

Justine, just FYI, the movies recently done with PPro, such as Deadpool, were not done with off-the-shelf PPro. It was a unique, highly customized version of PPro, with Adobe developers sitting with the editors, teaching them the NLE, fixing bugs, adding custom features as the editing went along. So they weren't edited with "PPro", they were editing with a highly customized NLE from Adobe, with a lot of Adobe help. On the other hand, all films done with FCPX, were done with off-the-shelf versions that we all have, and the editors got the same online training we all got. Yeah, someone loves pain, and not in the fun way. HA!
