I just realized the same keyboard commands that work while dragging files in the finder, work while dragging into FCPX. So you don't have to check your preferences before import. Drag + Option = Copy (plus icon) or Drag + Option + Command = Leave in place (shortcut icon).

Those are pretty universal. They'll work in a lot of apps.
