Hi all - I've jumped onto FCPX from another much older PC NLE Program and have started getting used to things and am really enjoying learning how things work. What I have yet been able to figure out though is how to insert an existing FCPX project into another FCPX project. What I'm trying to do is insert a couple of project i've completed that I can then trim into a Highlights Project. The projects I want to insert usually have audio and video from 2 cameras all synced up and I was hoping there would be a way to preserve the editing work done and just do a quick insert to include in the Highlights Project.

Hope that makes sense and that it's as easy to do as in my previous software. Thanks in advance!

First, remember we work with Timelines, not with Sequences now. Any clip in the Browser, you can right-click, "Open In Timeline", each is it's own Timeline. Thus, we have two basic ways to deal with what you want.

The first way is to not create Projects, but create new, empty Compound Clips inside the Event Browser first, edit your work inside of those. Common use would be if I have a film, it has 12 scenes, I'd make 12 Compound Clips in the Event Browser, and call each one "Scene 1", Scene 2", Scene 3", etc. Then I'd create a Smart Collection inside that Event for all clips with the name Scene in their titles. Edit each Scene, then create a single Project to assemble my scenes in. That way, I can drop those Compound Clips into any other Timeline I want.

The second, and the method best for your situation, is to create a new Project, open an older project you want to use, highlight the section of clips you want, or Cmd+A to select all. Copy (Cmd+C). Go back to your new Project, Paste (Cmd+V). Before you go any further, you can Select All at this point, and put it all into a single Compound Clip (Opt+G) to help manage your assets better. Repeat for each older Project you want to copy/paste into the new one. You can open each Compound Clip in this new Project into it's own Timeline to edit it's contents.

Another cool thing about Compound Clips, you can keyframe it, put effects on it, etc, as a whole, everything inside is effected equally. GREAT way for working with audio, if you think about it.
