REDCODE RAW in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.6 was created by BenB
As of the release of Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.6, native REDCODE RAW and the REDROCKET card are fully supported as of FCP 10.0.6. This is the R3D video file format that is proprietary to RED brand cameras. There are some neat tricks to using REDCODE RAW clips natively in FCP X. In this article I’ll walk you through what you’ll need to know if you want to edit REDCODE RAW media natively in FCP X.

I'm really happy that this finally made it into FCP (about 3 years after Adobe did it...).
This could have saved me of 8 hours of rendering last week.
Oh well, it's there and from all I've read, performance is pretty good, like on a rMBP.

Actually, Apple did not add this. It is an import plugin created by RED themselves. They never saw a need to create it for FCP 7. They could have written this plugin for FCP years ago if they had wanted. Why did RED wait so long?
And PPro was not the first NLE to support RED natively, nor did they do it well.

No, performance isn't pretty good. It's tremendously good! We just finished our first RED edit with the new update and I can tell you quite honestly: it rocks. Nothing compared to all the misery we have had in Premiere. As we said in a former post: it doesn't really matter who does it first, all that matters is who does it best. Just opened our FCP10 RED timeline in Smoke and voilà: perfect match. Now adding some finishing touches, then to Resolve for CC.

Hi Ben,
I never said Premiere was the first. I said they did it about 3 years ago, with CS4.
I do think Premiere did a lot of things well with their RAW support, it's that a lot of their media management (which management?) is pretty bad at times. The way FCP X has automatic proxies and link them etc. is just heads and shoulders above what Premiere has.
And you are wrong about RED though. RED said there wasn't enough in the API to get access to the RAW files in FCP X before this release. The fact that Apple themselves said: RED support is coming in 2012, shows to me that THEY are the ones that had a lot of control in this.
The plugin is indeed from RED, but look at how the new HUD works when you are doing RAW controls. That's not something RED made, it's something Apple created in the app.
Ronny; nice to hear performance is very good! From all I've read, I do think that the combination of FCP X's better media management functions coupled with the RED RAW support and the good native performance, makes it a very serious contender if you are working with RED RAW footage.
Before this update I would work with 4K HD Prores and I would get very good performance in FCP X even on an older iMac working from a single Firewire800 drive.

Hi sidderke,
You say exactly what I meant. R3D support in Ppro has always worked quite well, that's why I have given this NLE a chance. We even put together a system especially optimized for Ppro, based on information I got from someone at Adobe. And still we had nothing but problems. Numerous bugs, constant crashes and above all a completely unreliable media management. And it's not not only us, I have been reading many similar complaints on several forums. We could have switched back to FCP7 for our RED work but I was really tired of the slow workflow and the many workarounds, up to the point that I was going to refuse any further RED work. Now with the latest FCP10 update we have the best RED RAW workflow I have ever seen, and I am a very happy camper again.
