How to create moving glow highlight through psd text layers for graphic tv commercials

Hi guys, every time I come here I get my problems solved by some fabulous esteemed motion users.. I have been getting a few tv commercials lately involving the typical psd files with pictures and text elements for some animated ads, you know the annoying hard sell type that has 50 elements happening in 30 seconds..Most of it is layers flying in text pumping in and out
etc... What I need to know is how do you create the effect I see often where a line glow or bright pulse flashes across text layers to really highlight the word to pic.

If anyone can point me in the right direction I will be extremely grateful.

Many thanks

There is a text glow behavior like that in Motion. Not t my Mac now, but I know it's there. Explore all the Behaviors. I bet they could cut your time down a lot.

Thanks for your quick response... I tried that however I am not using the Motion Type, I am using supplied photoshop text files..
I tried to duplicate a layer add glow filter and move a mask across but it just does not look professional.. I was hoping some one may have done something similar with photoshop text layers..

cheers

Do the text in Motion and use its glow behavior. Not sure what I'd do with a photoshop graphic layer that's not actual text.

I've done it before but I think I used a third party plugin.

When I'm back in my studio later, I'll take a glance at this. I know it's easy to do. I just rarely do it.

Sorry if I am confusing the issue, I have attached a sample graphic..
What I want to do is have a thin line glow of sorts flash across the text banner..
I hope this makes sense of what I am trying to do..
cheers

truestory, can you post a link to the effect you mean. "thin line glow of sorts" is a bit vague

Be glad to help if I can.

Hi, I have attached a link to a video example on youtube..
Notice the glow highlight moving across the Text layers;
'Super Sale', 'Prices Slashed', '$3,000 Trade In' ETC....
I am trying to find a way of doing this effect in motion 5..
If any one can help...

Many thanks...

Ok, that's quite straightforward.

1. Create a new group above the relevant text layer and label it 'glow' or something recognisable.
2. With group selected and using the line draw tool, draw a white line over the first letter of the text for reference. Rotate it to about 30 degrees (or whatever suits you - you can adjust this again after step 3).
3. Select the 'glow' group (not the line) and from the top Object menu add an image mask. Drag the text layer graphic into the mask source window in the inspector. This should use the text's alpha channel to keep the glow within the text.
4. Turn the text visibility back on again in layers (it turns off by default with image masks).
5. Reselect the line layer and add a gaussian blur and adjust to taste.
6. Keyframe beginning and end, placing 'glow' so it runs across the text.

Might sound convoluted but it took me less than 5 minutes to do a quick test (see attached file)

Back at my studio today, I see I've always used the Optical Glow Across filter from CoreMelt's "Luminous" collection. Lots of great controls and flexibility.

There's also other stock plugins and various ways to do this. robertdee has a good basic solution there.

The "How To Cheat In Motion" book has lots of cool effects in it, too. Written for legacy Motion versions, but still works just the same in Motion 5. Several glow tricks in it.
