Motion running so slowly...

Motion 5 is running very slowly on my Mac Pro tower worth lot of RAM. Every time I've tried to open FCPX while Motion is open everything crashes.

I'm asking both programs to use 85% of the available RAM, I guess that's a problem when they're both open, but it shouldn't effect performance using the one at a time, right?

FCPX is also running slowly, but that's another forum.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks! Eddie

Motion is super GPU intensive, and will run a bit slower than Motion 4 at this point. I rarely run it at the same time as anything else. The 5.0.2 update helped, but it could use some performance improvements still.

You can also trying trashing pref files for both apps ("Preference Manager" free by Digital Rebellion).

Hey Ben,

I think Motion also defaults to 60p for new projects (I'm not sitting in front of my computer at the moment...) would life be better at 29.9?

Thanks,

Eddie

No, it's default in the Project Browser is 59.94, 720 HD. Not sure a slower frame rate will give you that much better performance. It can in fact potentially make movements more jerky.

The old trick from legacy versions is still recommended. Turn things off in the Render menu you don't absolutely need. Like reflections, shadows, lights, etc. Turn off Dynamic in the quality settings. Set to lower resolution and quality settings in the Render menu, also.

Just remember to either set them back properly in the Export window's Render tab.

Hi Ben,

I'll print out your suggestions out and keep them handy.

Does this also apply to FCPX?

Thanks so much!! Eddie

No, FCP doesn't have all of those graphic controls. If FCP is bogging down, edit Proxies, output full res. But that's a whole other post.
