Try holding down the shift key when you make a selection. Remember to Shift-select again to deselect before moving on to another object or you'll select both (or multiple) copies.
Be precise when you make a click. Click on character glyphs to select text, etc.

The point is that sometimes when I do precisely click on an object, it doesn't select that object. Have a look at the very first example - I click on the text, and yes it selects as it should. Then I click on the oval shape behind the text and it selects the background. It's definitely not a question of precision.

What does holding down the shift key do?Try holding down the shift key when you make a selection.

Hmmm... yeah.
Motion doesn't seem to be very consistent. I don't normally rely on selecting objects in the canvas. When your topic was started, I tried to emulate your example. I've since tried out a few variations.
Shift clicking objects is really no different than clicking directly other than adding objects to the original selection.
OK. So what gives? I'm not sure. I've set up several examples that work perfectly selecting any object. I've also set up some examples in which Motion is somewhat obstinate about selecting anything.
If I say I think it might have something to do with the background image that is used... I'd sound crazy. Turning off the background image usually solves the selection problem when there is one. Not all images in the background cause problems... so how could it be that? And, I couldn't tell you what makes a difference.
If Motion is giving you trouble selecting objects, save your project and restart Motion.
When Motion is working correctly, if you've selected an object whose bounds are larger than a smaller object you're trying to select instead, use the shift key/click to turn off the selected object then click on the smaller object. If you're within its bounds then it should select before anything in the background.
