Curl Flip Transition

Anyone help me with the best way to achieve the kind of curl flip transition on the speech bubble at the end of this commercial using FCPX or Motion? I've tried with page curl but a) I can't change the pivot point and b) it only shows the backside of the original image and not the second image on the reverse.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are satisfied with the animation you get with the standard page curl, you can do the following to achieve an effect similar to the one in the video. Create an image of the speech bubble on a transparent background and place it on the timeline. Transform the image rotation to get the position you want. Add your text, shadows and/or graphics to the transformed image as a title. Create a still frame from the transformed image and the import the still frame into FCPX. (You could also first import the still frame without titling into something like photoshop or pixelmator if you prefer to add text that way). Make another image that is the mirror image of the first one and title and save it as per above. You can do this by rotating the first image 180 degrees and saving a still frame at that rotation.

Once the finished still frames are on the timeline, place the two clips side by side. Line up the positions to match. On the first image, key frame the x position to rotate the image. When the rotation reaches the halfway point, cut to the duplicate image and key frame to continue the rotation to stop at the other side. Apply your page curl to the first clip.

If you can find an ionicon font of a speech bubble, you can apply some 3D in FCPX to make it look really good. That would create a slightly different workflow than described above, but may be worth looking into.

Doing this in Motion will offer better control, but it should be straightforward enough to get accomplished in FCPX. Hopefully this gives you something to try. You might also look up some of the speech bubble plugins that might include a similar animation.

You can try putting the text and the bubble together as a group. Then use page curl to animate it flipping over. Since you can't keep it centered, just animate the location of the group. Halfway through the page curl, when it's all curled up, change the text. The new text will have to be backwards. Here's a quick hack attached. Not exactly as pretty as the original, but I think they used a different tool.
