Hello and good day. That is a very cool effect!
At first glance I would guess Rotoscoping and Motion Tracking.
First take the fames you want to freeze and then Rotoscope the actor and then Motion Track the rotoscoped frames to ground so when the actor hits the mark it plays from that point.
That is my first guess.
If I think of anything else I will let you know

OK, so I may demo this for Coremelt at NAB. Here's the quick and dirty result using only two of their plugins, inside of an FCPX Project timeline.

I'll post a full tutorial online after NAB demo, probably Monday afternoon some time.

The secret is using a muted/disabled clip...

'was told this is called 'future-freeze' (really?) - very suprising effect.
Last year I made a test, 'handheld' it looks scary real!
no plug-ins at work!
You just need a 'paint.app', I prefer Pixelmator, and Motion5 for tracking/'follow motion'
Thought, I made a tutorial (?) ... ahh, I remember, that was in German and meanwhile pulled... you just have to punch-out subject from one frame, and apply the follow-motion-behaviour ... when you find out how its done, it's no rocket-science....
Looking foward to Ben's tut ... he's an exellent 'explainer'!
