I'm learning my way in Motion (more familiar with After Effects) and I'm wrapping my head around how motion blur works in Motion.

I get that motion blur in Motion is global. You either turn it on or turn it off for everything. - how do you target individual groups using motion blur? I've read in earlier iterations of Motion that there was a motion blur filter that you could use to target individual groups. But that filter doesn't appear when I search for it in motion. Any suggestions?

Not at my Mac now, but motion blur can be group specific, not global.
Look in the blur filters, too.

I could be wrong and it's hiding somewhere but the old Motion 4 motion blur filter (the one that used optical flow) appears to have gone - along with quite a few other useful filters.

It appears (to me, but I could be wrong) that the only way to achieve "real" motion blur in Motion 5 is via the global setting.

I found a motion blur filter, but its under the 'image units' heading. I'm not getting the results I want with it however, so it hasn't been of much help so far.

That's just a directional blur unfortunately - not a true motion using optical flow.

The only way I know of how to do motion blur on only some items is by creating your project then baking the video with the layers that you did not want to have motion blur turned off. Then import that rendered video and turn on motion blur then re-render. The video will not receive anymore blur because it is not moving. It is treated as an object. Or you can do it the opposite way with the motion blurred video gets rendered then re-render with the non motion blurred elements.
