Circular mask to reveal ring shaped logo

I have a client's logo that is shaped like a ring or a doughnut. I'm trying to create a clockwise reveal of the logo. Through reverse engineering, I've opened some of the FCPX titles that include a wipe element to them. It seems that a mask needs to be created and moved on a circular motion path. That or a doughnut shaped mask is created an then is shrunk in a clockwise direction.

Any thoughts on the proper or most efficient way to do this?

Thanks
Chris

I'd just build it in Motion. I'll post a sample later when I'm back in the studio.

Thanks Ben
Yes, I'm working in Motion. I've never worked in a circular fashion with a decreasing mask.

Thanks

Basically, in Motion, draw a line, 1 point thin, from the center of the Canvas, to the top center of the Canvas. Change the Anchor Point to its base. Then make it a replicator with the following:
Shape - Line
Start/End Points - all zero
Points - 1500 to be safe.

Add a Gaussian Blur filter to the Replicator, set to Amount to 0, just for fun.

Now, publish the Gaussian Blur's Amount premature, and publish the Replicator's Angle End parameter. You can keyframe both in FCPX.

So it doesn't just start as a sliver, I went one step further with mine. I keyframes the Effect Source layer's Opacity to 0 on frame 1, and to 100 on frame 4. Just to be safe.

Not to pull it all together. Right-click the Source Effect layer, and Add Image Mask. Drag the Replicator into the Source well for the Image Mask. Done.

Hope this helps out.

BTW, this is how you do easy pie charts in Motion, also.

Hey Ben
It took a bit to figure out but then realized that I needed to do it in FCPX. Either way, thank you for the help! I'll continue to reverse engineer what you provided me to build on it and improve. A shot of my first version is attached. Its pretty rough in a few ways.

Next step is to create a lttle glow on the front of the mask and spread out the gaussian blur a touch. If time allows, I'll see about applying individual masks for each circular row of the logo so their reveals are slightly staggered.

Thanks again for your selfless assistance for a Motion noob!

So many possibilities...
Apply the glow to the Effect Source.
You could duplicate that Replicator, and scale each, and perhaps use a Blend Mode rather than an Image Mask, maybe... I'm not sure. Just thinking off the top of my head.
Don't see the screen shot.

Nope, attachments are tricky here. To be safe, make sure it is a JPEG, and make sure the file size isn't too large.

I thought of something. If you have different areas inside the circular logo, and want to reveal them from the inside out, why not stack a copy in FCPX for each area you want to reveal. Then scale the animated mask I did, revealing the inner most part on the top most layer, working your way down.

This would require taking the template I made, selecting the Replicator layer, going to the Inspector > Properties > Transform, and publish the Scale parameter. So you can scale the circular mask to different sizes.

Just thinking out loud...

Is this logo one flat file, or a layered PSD? I'd love to get my hands on a copy of that file and play around with it.

Hey Ben
You are more than welcome to play with it. I'll PM you a download link. I tried to attacha little movie on here of the animation I created, but I think it was too big.
