Shapes and Objects moving, created in Motion 5

Got bored and wanted to make some Motion animation graphics, but needed a reason. So i started making my own youtube cooking show! only i don't really cook, so it's really just fast cuts of me picking up dinner or heating up frozen meals.

anyway, it was an excuse to make a project in Motion.

I made everything from scratch in Motion 5, not using any third party plugins (even the music was from FCPX's library of music). The background was created using a light in 3d mode with a generator of a star, only i adjusted it to have the amount of fans i wanted in it, and changed the blend mode so it wasn't black and white, on top of a solid green layer.

all the food, the pot, the knife, and hat were all created inside Motion using the bezel tool to make the objects. one really nice feature was just hand drawing an object (like the top of the hat) and then using the geometry settings for the shape to round the edges, so the lines i drew weren't so harsh and jagged.

really getting use to the pen tool helped make the objects look great. i didn't trace any objects, but found photos online to just visually copy from. But i did use a lot of shapes and masks to help get started on some of the objects. The pan is actually a pill shape with the top leveled off with a mask. and then the top part that looks like you're looking into the pan is actually just an oval with a gradient on it.

i used lots of outline borders for shapes to make everything pop a little more, and look more cartoony.

the tomatoes have a shine to them, which i made just by adding a square shape, rounding the edges, and feathering them a lot, then dropping the opacity.

the microwave also was made using gradients for the handle, along with a drop shadow. and the blinking clock was animated using a Behavior so that i could set some parameters (opacity) to sort of bounce back and forth making it looking like it's blinking.

creating groups and organizing everything was KEY to making this not look like a nightmare in Motion. I kept each group named properly, and each layer was named properly. It helped that they all had an icon of the shape next to them, just for reference.

For the credits, i saved myself lots of editing time for future episodes! i made the credits sequence in Motion 5, and then made sure that the scrolling text and objects were all in one group, and made the text published so that i could edit it in FCPX. then exported the project as a generator for FCPX. So now when i have new episodes, i can simply drag and drop the compound clip for my intro onto the project, add my clips and make my edits, then i drag in the generator for the credits, go in and edit the credits so each episode is unique, add in my audio (because you can't export audio from motion when it's going to FCPX as a generator apparently), and let it render out. and i'm done! No need to go into Motion each time i want new credits for each episode.

Couldn't have been easier! I made all of this in about 6 hours (most of it was fiddling around, trying to think what i wanted to do with it all). But it could absolutely be done much faster if you knew what you wanted to make and went right to it!

I could have made this all in After Effects (i'm a little more familiar with that) and could have created the shapes in photoshop. but there was just something fresh, new, and more enjoyable about creating this all in Motion! Not to mention the ability to just type in my new credits each episode into a generator in FCPX, and never having to go back into Motion again for new credits!

Let me know what you all think of the animation. I always like to hear feedback and critiques.

Animations rock. The video is hilarious. Super well done. Thanks for posting. That is funny as all hell. My wife and I fell out of our chairs. I posted it to my FB account, with the comment, "Finally, a cooking show for bachelors who were NOT raised in southeast Louisiana!" ROFLMFAO!!!!
