Discovered a problem when working for sometime in Motion 5. I'm working away using a mask to mask out some glare on a window. Motion works fine for a =bout 30mins or so then if I ⌥ Click to make an additional point on a mask path I get a crash. This started last night on a separate system Motion 5.0.6 and is now happening on on a completely different system using 5.0.4
I trashed prefs and used Disk Utility last night to no avail

First, be sure the auto-save is turned on and configured in Motion. I set to 12 copies max, a copy ever 5 minutes.

Then, what are the hardware specs, especially RAM and GPU?

Have you tried reconfiguring the Render settings?

Yes have already got the auto-saves in place...a must have really.

One system - MacPro 24GB Ram Motion 5.0.6 Radeon HD4870

Two System - MacPro 32GB Ram Motion 5.0.4 Radeon HD4870

Render settings are on 'Best' & 'Dynamic' on both of the different systems is the reason you ask because you would suggest selecting 'normal' instead of ;best' when working then switch back before render?

32GB MacPro has a HD5870 card in.

Really don't think its a hardware issue because they are two totally different systems.

I'm running 16GB RAM with a 5870 with no issues at all. Internal secondary drives, too, not the OS drive. Aside from a reinstall I'm not sure. I can't replicate it on my MP.

But yes, I always set up my Render settings before doing anything. Turn off Shadows, etc, that I'm not using. I set Resolution to Half and Quality to Draft until I have my basic elements and timing laid out. Then I up the quality, etc, to simply polish up how things look. But my system is pretty stable.

Since it does this for two different versions, I suspect hardware. But then, what 3rd party add-ons to you have installed?

Try doing a Save As with a different name and working on that copy.
