FCP can't see my external device.

My computer can see external device, but FCP cannot.

MacBook Pro
OS 10.9.5 (Maverick)
FCP 7

External device is Sony GV-HD700

I need to capture footage.

This device shows up on my Mac Pro, but I'm traveling now and reliant on the laptop.

Any suggestions welcome.

FCPX will only see a directly connected camera or deck, for a live capture from tape, if it is Firewire. What you need is an I/O box to translate between the deck and FCPX. From what I know about that deck, and it's been a long time since I fooled with one, I think that's the issue.
