when working w h264 files, any thoughts on preferred import/log workflow in FCP7 on OSX 10.7.5 ? convert all raw files w mpeg stream clip or pavtube (to Prores 422) then import to FCP? I made the mistake of logging hundreds of shots before realizing the .mov files from my new camera were h264. any way to convert then re import the files and keep the log notes? I know FCP7 don't like working the h264 files but I screwed up! Any suggestions?

Batch them all to ProRes in Compressor.

What camera did they come off of?

If you can't afford Compressor then MPEG Streamclip will do. (just be aware it will be a lower bitrate than Compressor). I've done a lot of testing converting H.264 files with different programs and found converting to ProRes4444 in Compressor is the best. Nothing will ever be as good as the original H.264 files straight from you camera in terms of quality, but as you said, FCP7 doesn't work well with these files especially if you do colour correcting  it just can't do it.

If your computer can't handle ProRes4444, use ProRes422(HQ) minimum.

any way to convert then re import the files and keep the log notes?

sorry i don't know what 'log notes' are. if you've already starting editing just reconnect the timeline clip to the newly converted file.
