Theoretical "Best" Computer for FCP7 was created by bobgob
Hi,
I am a professional FCP7 video editor looking to upgrade to a desktop machine. I currently use a 2.2 quad 16gb ram macbook pro that serves me well but I want quicker renders and exports. I know I could go out and buy the best Mac Pro possible, but Im under the impression the FCP7 only uses one core/32 bit and 4gb of ram so why would i need a $3000 64 core 32 gigs/ram if the program is not using its full potential.
So to sum it up what model of mac pro in last few years is the best bang for your buck if your only running FCP7?
THANKS!!

Wait and get the new 2013 Mac Pro coming soon, and switch to FCP X when 10.1 hits. With all due respect, I'm not joking. Your FCP 7 is running about as fast as it will ever run now, not much will ever improve it.

Seriously, though, that's not an answer. I'm curious too. I don't wanna switch. So I've got some skin with this answer, too.
And, uh, not to put too fine a point on it, but isn't this the FCP7 forum? Just wondering...

There's not much you can do to make FCP 7 run faster these days. Just a fact of life. It is outdated technology, and a very clunky way of working. May as well ask how to make a current Mac model run Word Perfect faster. Just saying.
Mac Pro, dual core, 8GB RAM (so other apps can run at the same time with enough to go around), eSATA RAID 0 media drive, AJA Kona LHi card (assuming you edit everything in AJA DVCPRO-HD codec).
That's about as fast as you can get. GPU won't help, more RAM or CPU cores won't help, you're pretty much stuck at that brick wall.
So yes, my initial reply was in deed a legitimate answer, in an FCP 7 forum.

OK, now that's the answer.
FCPx isn't as fast as you might think...if one doesn't know how to use it. :silly:
