My current setup is an iMac running 10.6.8 and FCP7. I have zero plans to "upgrade" to FCPX. ALL of the materials I've created for the company I work for over the last 7 years are in FCP7 format, and now I find myself in a little bit of a pickle and keep finding conflicting information online. So I need advice.

We're in the middle of a project for a client that is going to require a second machine so I can be exporting/rendering/working on two things at once - exporting from FCP7 on one while I'm editing on something else on the other, or working in some other graphics program. My boss told me to go find a refurbed mac that would do the job and he'd buy it asap. But it seems that everything is coming with 10.8 now, and I'm in the middle of this project and it's going on for at least another 7 weeks. I don't have time to learn new software and the thought of migrating over a project like this to new software makes me want to curl up in a corner and cry.

WILL FCP7 WORK ON 10.8?

Is there anyway to install 10.7 on new or newish macs?

What would you do?

THANKS!

Hey man,

don't cry, you'll be alright. I'm running 10.8.3 on a 2 year old MacBookPro. I have FCPX installed, I have FCP 6 installed, it all runs beautifully. You can't have both Final Cut versions running at the same time but that's the only limitation I notice.

As an advice: learn FCPX when you find the time. Get proper training like eg Ripple Training does it. It's well worth the investment of time and (little) money, editing will never be the same after that. I have so much more fun using FCPX, you have no idea.

Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for the quick response!

Learning FCPX is on my never-ending list of To Dos, and it seems every time I carve out time to do so, another big project drops in our lap. I will admit that the amount of horrible things I've heard about FCPX keeps moving it further down my Software Learning list, but it's still there. I figure once I get a new machine, and get this project underway, then I can do so. I've never heard of Ripple Training but I'll def check them out!

90% of those "horrible things" are completely untrue, also.

Ripple Training and macProVideo, two best online at this time.
