Is there a limit to the number of video layers you can use in FCP7?

I have a student who was cutting on an iMac, with an external firewire drive and when she tried to render her video (8 layers, I believe), her media went off-line.

Is there any way to deal with this number of video layers without causing this sort of problem? Would it have helped if she would have nested the video before she tried to render it?

Unlimited layers. I've used more than that with FCP 7 & FW800, never had anything go off line. I doubt that was the cause. Double check Scratch Disk settings.

I was under the impression that 99 was the limit

Not that I think about it, no, it was unlimited. There was only 99 levels of undo. But, either way, 99 levels of undo, 99 tracks, rare anyone would do that. But I seem to remember working with an audio guy who was doing the movie "Che" and his FCP 7 has over 100 tracks. It has been so long ago, who can remember?
