I cannot locate the original FCP 7.0.1 disc I had first and no longer have the serial number for it. My old lap top died so FCP went with it. I am not sure if FCP will install anyway on my new laptop as I have 10.8.2 OSX now. Are they compatible and how can I get a serial number for 7.0.1 so I can install FCP Studio?

You'd need to contact Apple support and jump through their hoops to get a new serial number. Since it is a product they no longer sell or support, they may not do anything. Or find some kind soul who will... I'm not allowed to say.

From what I've seen, upgrading a Mac from OS X 10.6 to 10.7/8 with Final Cut Studio already installed works fine. I've heard mixed reports about installing from scratch in OS X 10.7/8.

Don't know a solution for the serial number problem, but I can share my experience of installing an FCS 3 Copy on a new Retina Macbook Pro, together with a FCPX-suite install.
We always backup a .dmg and we have some backups of our serial numbers. I would greatly advise you do to so in the future, when installing $1000 purchases ;-) The same with plugins, only FCPX and the whole App Store doesn't need it.

Now, there are some bugs to be aware off that we noticed:
* Motion 4 can crash, if you have Motion 5 installed.
* The whole software-update model in Mountain Lion is different. It doesn't update FCP7 to the latest 7.0.3.
* Even if you download this update manually (still available from Apple to download), AFTER you have FCS and FCPX installed, it doesn't update. Don't ask me why, you run the installer, it completes fine, but one way or another, it doesn't update the software.

My solution was deleting the whole FCPX and FCS Studio with the Digital Rebellion tools, and following this chronology to get rid of the before-mentioned bugs:

- Install Final Cut Studio 3. (CD, .dmg, whatever you have laying around).
- Install the update to FCP 7.0.3 (and Motion 4, Compressor, etc.) manually. Search around on the website of Apple for an update, I think called 2010-2 Pro Apps.
- Start Motion 4, just let it run. Close it down afterwards.
- Install FCP X and Motion 5 (if you want) AFTER this process.

This way you will have the latest version of Final Cut Studio 3, and the latest version of FCPX (if that's something you want of course) and everything (including Motion 4 and Motion 5) will run fine.

Good luck with getting a new serial.

will try to do as you say even if I'm now on 10.10.3, 'cause I wrote this post www.fcp.co/forum/5-final-cut-pro-7-fcp7/...pgrading-stuff#62705
