Check ebay if someone sells the upgrade pack. Was new some 300 bucks IIRC.

Final Cut Studio 3 on eBay or something similar is the only way to get it, as previously stated.
Be sure you get the FULL set of DVDs (I forget how many there were, like 8 dozen or something), and the serial number, in the original box. I know lots of stories where folks purchased it second hand, and didn't get all of the DVDs, or the s/n was missing, etc, packaged up in some DVD ring binder sleeves or some such crap.
Or consider moving to X, which would cost less.

Thanks BenB, Yes, I've just seen it for sale at £50, not touching that one for sure!! I'm considering the move to X but, as with many other users, I like the old interface and workflow, also, It's not backwards compatible as I understand it?

It is backwards compatible. Xto7 and 7toX handle all of that.
You "like" the old interface, or you're nervous about learning an new one? The workflow is faster, it's easier, easier to learn for sure, and will run on newer OS versions without jumping through hoops.
But nothing wrong with sticking to the old paradigms if you want. It is all simply personal choice.
Every time I am forced to launch legacy FCP versions, I get very depressed and feel I've gone back in time a few decades to edit with rocks and twigs.
Get the free trial version, buy a month subscription to macProVideo.com, spend some time learning it. See what you think. You can always just move it to the trash and forget it.

Aye, you're right there, basically can't be bothered learning new stuff at my age... as I've been using FCP since version 2 I'm reluctant to move on I guess..
It's probably time!

A week ago I was teaching a 63 year old editor who last edited on three quarter inch tape and cut his teeth on a Moviola. He was very excited, and picked up everything very fast.
I often have lots of folks over 45 or 50 in my classes, and they're some of the best.
I'm 52 and I'm still "teaching" the newest stuff, and literally at my sexual peak. But then, that's been happening since I turned 40, ssssooooo... at this rate I think I'm going to die from too much sex before I see 60. But that's besides the point.
Point is, age has nothing to do with anything.

Yep, I had a seventeen y/o summer intern who had the choice of learning Premiere CS6 or FCP X for her project. She decided on FCP 6. Throughout the whole summer I couldn't teach her anything new. "That's how we do it on high school"Point is, age has nothing to do with anything.
