Yeah, I've clicked your + with the karma, I don't know what's up with that. Just keep being positive, enough people will come around & bump up your karma.

I've been using my MBPr to edit with but recently added a 2nd larger monitor to edit on. Trouble is after calibrating both screens with a Syder4Elite the 2nd monitor which is a Dell U2711 has much richer deeper colours which don't match the MBPr. I couldn't start color grading on one monitor and finish it on the other.
I know the Dell is a wide gamut but I didn't think they would be so different. I'm no expert when it comes to things like this so any advice would be most welcome.

You will want to do the final grade on the dell, but keep in mind that a broadcast monitor is what is used to usually do final grades. I don't have a rMBP but used to have 15" MBP setup with a 24" cinema display, and I would close the MBP screen and just use the 24", might seem like a waste of a good screen but it freed up the GPU to just run the much larger monitor.
Best case would be buy another large screen and close down the rmbp display. I just did a mini tutorial for a friend who is switching to FCP X and using a rMBP, the screen size seemed to small.

This brings up a sobering notion I'd never considered, that the color grading I do on the MBPr will not match the end user's experience.
How about one of the technical geniuses producing all these color grade filters, could develop a settings plugin for the MBPr System Preferences, so that by a simple selection the MBPr could mimic a broadcast monitor in colors at least?
Could this be possible?

Related to this is which monitor profile would be best? I have been editing some pretty large projects on the rMBP (512ssd/16 ram) and an Apple cinema 23 screen with no problems. Maybe two crashes in three months. I use both screens with the viewers on the large screen. Awesome with the waveforms underneath.
I can match the cinema display to the rMBP really closely but I wonder if I'd be better to have the Cine display set to a 709 profile? There is one selectable on th MBP. The colors are not vastly different, but when grading, every bit counts.
I know computer monitors are very much second best compared to broadcast monitors when grading, but would a 709 profile be close enough?

Rec 709 is about as close as you going to get to broadcast on rmbp or an Apple LED cinema screen. Setting the screens to about half brightness will also approximate a broadcast monitor.

I would not quote for ever, more for the time being.
Recalling the 12" Powerbook was dropped and today we have a 13" Macbook Pro.

Also, can anyone confirm the rumor that Apple has killed the 17" MacbookPro forever?
thanks

Thanks, Wildgiles. I'll try that and see how well it matches a few HD TVs.
