Stained glass like video collage was created by onionpalac
I'm new here and to FCP as well.
This place looks awesome and I hope to contribute as well as learn.
I've been attempting a stained glass like video collage effect using FCP.
If you can imagine something like this:
with various video clips representing each shape.
To make it even more challenging I'm imagining each shape moving around in a blob-like fashion.
To keep my question simple - is there anyway to create something similar to this in FCP?
Animating the shapes of various video clips like that.
If so - how?
I don't know how easy or difficult it could be.
Would Motion be useful in doing something like this?
I found a great plug-in for molding shapes out of clips here:
alex4d.wordpress.com/2012/03/06/mask-plus-fcpx-effects/
I spent some money and bought FCPX with Motion. Teaching myself the programs and figuring out my system of approaching these things is exciting but this kind of non-linear animated collage idea has stumped me.
Any words of wisdom or direction pointing would be much loved . . .
Thanks.

This is more advanced Motion work. Do the Ripple Training videos to get up to speed quickly. Both FCP X and Motion 5 go so deep there's lots you'll miss out on being "self taught". But yeah, this is going to be a Motion project, not FCP X.
You'll draw a bezier shape and use it as the source for the image mask of your video clips.
You'd keyframe planned movements. You'll use the Parameter Behavior of wriggle for the jitteriness, perhaps on the Group itself.
Apply a different color filter(s) to each to get the variations in grading for each shape.
After doing Ripple's "Motion 5 - Fast Forward" video course, you'll benefit most from "Shapes, Paint Strokes & Masks" video course for this specific effect.

Endless thanks BenB. This is invaluable information.
I'm off to purchase the Motion Ripple tutorials now.
Very excited!
Anymore help always welcome.

Is Adobe After Effects better for working with animations mentioned in this thread?
After speaking with a few editor friends of mine they say that FCPX / Motion 5 is a bad choice.
What's the word around here?

Typical advice from folks who have no idea what FCP X / Motion 5 are capable of. You can do what you want easier and faster in Motion than in AE. Not to mention saving yourself tons of money.

Thanks man.
Both editors work for a major Japanese company that seems to shy away from Apple software in general. I don't understand but I feel better hearing your side as well.
FCPX is not very popular around Tokyo . . .
