Adding soundtracks

Here's how I've been adding music to my projects - I find the place in my edit I want the music to start and click on the soundtrack in the browser and then hit Q to add it. It attaches itself to whatever clip is in the storyline above it. If I later decide to delete the clip it's attached to, the soundtrack disappears along with that clip. Obviously, I can move the soundtrack to a different clip before deleting the one it's attached to, but this seems like a funny way to deal with this. I guess there's no way to have the soundtrack independent of the clips above it - or is there?

If you hold down alt and cmd you can move the attach point to a different clip.

Or delete your clip with shift + delete.

I can actually move the file just by clicking on it and dragging. I guess I just expected to be able to leave the music hovering down there, but everything has to be attached to something - like a muffler or tailpipe on a car. I don't suppose it matters where it's attached as long as you don't casually delete the clip it's attached to. I've used the shift/delete option before and been surprised when I later deleted the gap that was inserted in its place and had my music disappear. Now that I have my brain around it, tho isn's an issue. Thanks.

I'm not talking about moving the clip, audio or video. The audio clip stays in the same place, it's just the attach point that moves freeing up the video clip that it was attached to.

Pazu's answer would mean your clip gets removed and replaced with a gap clip, which is another solution. If you have extra room at the start of your audio file you can attach it to a gap clip at the start of the timeline.

Noco is correct. Now, you say you're doing a ripple delete. That means some other clip is moving into the place that original was. Not an issue, "reconnect" the audio to the clip that will move there, or to another clip. No one said "move" the clip, we said "reconnect" it to a different clip.

Or, you could be working on an edit to the audio. In which case put the audio clip in the Primary Storyline, and connect the video clips to it. Maybe even creating a secondary Storyline.

You can use the Range too (R) to select a Range of the gap clip, and do a Replace Edit, too. Or just replace edit the whole gap clip.

There's so many ways to do this, it's a non-issue. Just figure out which is the "core" of your story. It sounds like it may be the audio. In which case, put it in the Primary Storyline. Solved.
