Canon GL2 + Final Cut Pro X = Good Match???? was created by Sky
I am new to FCP and I was wondering if the Canon GL2 works properly with FCProX?
The apple site says it is a compatible camera but I would like to hear from others who use both.
I have also read that since it is a mini-DV camera that I would need to use firewire to transfer the video footage from camera to FCProX.
I have not purchased one yet - but I like the reviews of the Canon GL2 and the quality of the footage I have seen from the camera.
I also like the fact that the camera can be found on ebay for an affordable price for a newbie like me ($350 - $800 with lots of accessories).
Also - it seems that they are very much available as are different lenses and accessories.
Any thoughts?
I want to be sure I don't spend money on a camera that will only give me problems and headaches trying to transfer the footage I shoot.
Thanks so much for haring your experiences!

I can't tell you how well the Camera will communicate with FCPX but you should not have any issues.
I don't want to talk you out of anything but are sure you want to go with the GL2? You could probably get a HD cam for couple 100 bucks more.

I'm probably waaay too late on this, but based on my experience I would not recommend a GL2. I own a GL2 and shot a documentary with it in 2009/2010. When importing tapes into FCPX, the timestamp of the clip is for 1 day previous of when the footage was actually shot. Footage shot on another camera imported just fine. FCPX still has plenty of bugs to be worked out in regards to DV capture and I doubt they're spending many resources trying to focus on those.
I would definitely go with an HDV camera or I personally think the small Canons work great (HF S series).
You can find a more detailed explanation of my DV adventures inside of FCPX here: discussions.apple.com/thread/3554689

I just bought a DSLR for shooting video as it looks like that's the way forward. If you can't get a 5D II (which I couldn't) a Rebel T3i is a good option in the range you are talking (which also has an adjustable screen, unlike the 5D). What I like about the new set up (I sold a Canon XH-A1 to get the T3i/600D and a Zoom H4n) is that its modular so I can upgrade lenses, etc. as time goes on. If you don't know Stu Maschwitz's prolost.com blog, I HIGHLY recommend it. Its what prompted me to go the 600D route.

I don't know man, don't want to start a DSLR conversation. But they still have so many draw backs.
Still take a Camcorder/Video Camera over a photo camera (DSLR) any day.
Maybe in a control envorment but then I would choose something more in the direction of a RED, ARRI or something in the level range of a Canon EOS C300.

Thats like someone asking you if he should buy a second hand Ford Escort and you tell him to buy a Ferrari. If you have the money for a RED good for you!
The original post was asking about a GL2 (which I used to own). There's no comparison at that price range. I've used/owned camcorders and DSLRs and DSLRs get a better image but it depends what you are shooting, of course. If you are doing events coverage or weddings a camcorder is better. If you are shooting stuff where you can control things and only need to shoot in short amounts, DSLRs. In the UK, most jobs posted now are asking for people specifically with DSLRs. I shared an office with a RED ONE owner and he got more work out of the D5s he owned.

Well for a full out deck DSLR will probably cost you as much or more as a Canon XF305.
Again don't buy rent.
DSLR just don't cut it with its Video handicaps for a videographer.
