Does it open in Garageband? If so, then export it to AIFF from Garageband. MP3 import to FCP X shouldn't be an issue. You shouldn't do it though, but that's a different story.

I wouldn't use GarageBand. It doesn't output 48k. Use Compressor or Streamclip or even iTunes.

Why not iTunes? It does a perfectly good job. It uses the same QuickTime module the others do. I prefer using a Compressor droplet myself.

A, because MP3 is a crappy format, and B, because video applications have enough to do dealing with multiple layers of compressed video without having to deal with decompressing multiple layers of heavily compressed audio.

To add detail to what Tom has stated, MP3 is very heavily compressed, and has very little dynamic range (distance between loudest and most quiet parts of the audio). The dynamic range is so small it's laughable for video work, but great for online music downloads. In fact, audiophiles actually hate MP3 with a passion because of the over compression it does. It's ok for rock, but sucks for classical pieces. Your nice home stereo system can handle much greater dynamic range than an MP3 is able to reproduce.
FCP does not demand AIFF, but the digital video format uses AIFF by default. Well, until Long-GOP formats became to popular (rightly or wrongly).
If you want to keep the quality of audio, never compress it to MP3, keep it at the digital video standard of 16 bit, 48kHz, in either AIFF, WAV, or BWAV.
