FCPX Colour Tools was created by NocoDave
I've just been watching the MacBreak Studio video currently on the home page and thought it could be a good time to post this as others surely are/have been watching it too.

When I was first considering FCPX the one thing I wasn't sure about was how I'd get on with they colour board rather than wheels. It turned out I've really taken to it, started off as an "ok, I can work with it", and seems to have turned preferable.

Over the last few days I've been taking notes on the general colour tools ready to put in a feature request and thought it might be good to hear how others are now getting on with it and what they would like to see now that there has been plenty of time to have been working with it. Here's my main requests at the moment.

• User defineable luma ranges.
• Frame store or ability view any different clip in a second preview monitor.
• Motion Tracker for isolation masks.
• Custom shape isolation masks.
• Colour picker that displays area values for analyzing colour balance. Preferably with 4x4, 8x8 & 16x16 average value options.
• Re-namable corrections.

You mainly got most of the request that I would like to see.
But I would also like to see...
  • Alpha matt correction
  • A option to switch from color wheel to the board would be cool (like the color wheel in the keyer)
  • Curve editor

Alpha matt correction would be good, there was a time when I'd have jumped on the optional colour wheels but for me it's grown irrelevant. The curve editor I think should appear, I've never been a big curve user, but they are popular and powerful.

Bring back Color, period.

Bring back colour by all means, but period. Having a great set of colour tools built into FCPX is excellent, and it has so much potential.

If FCP X only had a "great" set of color tools.

The quick exposure adjustments are nice from within FCPX. The color controls are limited.

Their definitely not a fully blown grading solution, but some jobs don't need/warrant/budget for a full blown grading solution.

I think it's important to have a quick set of tools in an NLE and I expect them to be limited, I know the difference for me what jobs want done in the NLE and what jobs warrant getting sent out to Resolve.

But some jobs that don't warrant it or don't have the budget for it inevitably have the odd shots that need it. FCPX's colour tools have already done wonders in limiting this, and if just had that little bit more it would be ideal.

As far as grading goes within the program, I certainly feel that FCP X is waaaaay better than it's predecessor. (Despite the Colourboard)

It would be nice to have some advance color correction tools.
Apple Color was pretty cool still use it today but with todays DaVinci Resolve I really don't see Apple releasing a heavy corrector.

I rather have them focus getting Apple Motion some better compositing tools... :silly:

I'd be interested in knowing what you mean by better compositing tools in Motion. Very curious.

Being able to control the feather of a mask based on it's points rather the most basic over all would be a great start.

Hmmm.. that's interesting. I've never needed that before, but it's a very interesting concept. Could be nice.

It's an excellent tool to have, it's very useful. After Effects never had it for years before PV feather appeared.

I bet that could easily be built for Motion.

I would have thought so too. The key when PV Feather first appeared was that it used the AE native masks, that would be important in Motion too. But it's way beyond my capabilities.

I'm sure, but maybe Apple goes the Adobe way to use Motion for better color correction/grading. We just needed the round trip feature back.

All I wanted is breezier masks for secondary color correction. The circle/square mask doesn't really cut it.

With Resolve, I don't miss Color that much any more.
