Hi all,
I would like to share my experience and see if i am the only one to get this bad feeling that blocked me to move definitely to FCPX.

-Using Octo Mac Pro+ Nvidia 4000+ 20GB ram and many array for rush and projects from Raid 0 to raid 5.
-Rush are imported from P2 Cam (AVC-INTRA 100MB--HD1920 29,97) and converted by FCPX directly.

Here is my bad feeling:
Moving, dragging elements on the timeline isn't smooth like with other NLE (PPro, Fcut 7, Avid). It is like you have some glue attached to them and it is all the time a pain to move or drag.
Well, it is not fluid and in real time.
Any experiences about that please ? is it the same for all of you ?
Thank you

A couple of things:

>>Make sure you are running FCPX 10.0.04--the latest update is important for performance I have found

>>In the playback preferences, make sure you select better performance (and if you had proxies made, make sure you select proxies)

Your tower and card look pretty powerful, so that shouldn't be the issue. Hopefully the above helps.

Also, sometimes projects get corrupted. You might try creating a new project and then copying (select all and paste) your old project into the new one.

Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for your tips @Screendor but unfortunately i am running last 10.0.4, better preferences is checked (i don't use proxies)
and my prob is more about the comfortability to move elements (rushes) on the timeline than real playback.

Hmm.

Is your Event on an external Drive? It should be.

Also, I had a similar problem that was solved by duplicating the Project and putting it on my internal system drive. That seemed to help quite a bit.

It might be worth checking out the compatibility of your graphics card. On the Apple site they seem to recommend the card you have for Adobe Products, I think FCPX needs OpenCL and it looks like this card dose not support OpenCL... hope this helps:)

Thanks @Robs, it is a good light that i'm going to check.
So, for exemple you haven't got this bad feeling like i've described ?
Moving elements on the time line is 100% smooth and fluid for you ?
thx (compared to Premiere for exemple, is it the same comfortability ?

You can't compare the two. Because of the magnetic timeline the behavior of moving clips in the timeline is very, very different.

Hi Vader I had problems with sticky playback until I changed my graphics card from the Geforce GT 120 to the Radeon HD 5770 then it was fine, a big improvement! I have no experience with Premiere.

Here is a list of compatible cards from the apple site.

Maybe it is what i don't like Tom, this magnetic glue ): afraid that there is no hope...i can't imagine working like that with 2K or 4K rushes.

I tested with a Quadro FX 5600 that give me the same frustration. It is not possible to edit like that more than one hour...i'm going made if i try more.

It's something you get used to, the magnetism I mean. I find it very tactile, like cutting film. You can't drop a piece of film on top of another piece of film. You put it between pieces. If you want a gap in the film you put in spacing. Everything sticks to everything else. You break a section out of a reel and roll up all the tracks that go with it. It all moves as single piece the way connected clips behave. It's something that's inherent in this editing method. It's like the skimmer, once you learn to use it, I don't know how I worked in earlier versions, dragging that stupid playhead around.

Thank you Tom for you detailed explanation (but that telling me i wasn't clear and i'm confused).
I like very much this new way of editing and i understand it very well, using gap, connecting clip, merge elements...all of that is very well done and works very well...The trouble is only when you select an element (clip) on your timeline and decide to drag or move it to an other place (choosing the placement tool of course to not play with the magnetic), so when you move the element like that it is very slow, you select, maintain the element and when you move it, it is not fluid (not in real time)...

OK, that's different. I'm not seeing that. Clips drag pretty much as they did in 7, except you can't drop them wherever you like.

yes you can drop them wherever you like using the position tool (P)

I love that analogy! What a great way to conceptualize the overall process for people new to online editing. I could see someone making a split-frame movie showing the comparison (maybe Apple).

@Vader positioning clips with the position tool for me works very fluid and responsive. Not sure why it is slow for you. If other editing functions are working fine for you then I would suspect it is not your graphics card, even though it is not a listed model. If you have slow performance with other editing tools (i.e. trim tool, blade, etc.) then the graphics card could be the issue.

Is this common to more than one project? Has this ever worked satisfactorily for you?

Thank you @dgwvideo for you answer.
Yes it is common to all projects, new and old (on HDD system or Raid system.
No it never gave me satisfaction, since the first release.
Or maybe it is just coming from me, cos i have many years back of editing with Ppro and FCP7 and perhaps that this Magnetic revolution does this problem at the end (personality i hate this magnetic things, but is is only my point of view)
Other boring and important non-working things and this time it is a big big bug for sure:
When you have 3 layers and you add a transition to the last one (video 3) then you can see the effect of this transition applied to the others...solution is to merge the video 3 with the transition (dunno if it is clear).
