Remove flicker from footage? Any suggestions? was created by desilva_oz
Hi guys,
Received some footage that was shot with high shutter speed in a churchand resulted in flicker on every 2nd or 3rd frame. Any suggestions on plugins / programs or steps to help remove this (if at all).
My only concern is that the flicker appears to be a little in-consistent, every two or three frames I see exposure change..

Yeah it was definately user error.. as you know here in Australia we shoot pal, and the shutter value was between 100 - 500 and i "assume" not a divisable of 50 hertz. Shot under tungsten church lighting. Was a multicam shoot and the other footage is perfect. Also the footage shot from the same camera there after was fine (also indoor tungsten).
Have you herd of any solutions to remove banding or flicker?
Thanks

[PROBLEM SOLVED]
After extensive research and trial and error I have found the best solution to fix my serious issue.
Camera shot about 1hr of ceremony on the wrong Video mode [NTSC] instead of PAL and shutter was extremely high also, shooting under tungsten light resulted in severe flickering and some banding to the video, when I say severe I mean totally unusable.
I came from adobe straight to FCPX, and at the time of this post there is no FCPX paid plugin that will remove flicker. I tried a motion made plugin (from fcp.co) that removes every "x" frame and tried to color correct the effected frames with no luck due to the banding light shifting upwards during flicker at random frames.
I tried out Furnace/core found here: www.thefoundry.co.uk/products/furnacecore/
Only available with FCP up to 7 not X. So i gave it a go, and the results were astonishing! removed every bit of flicker and no artifacts whatsoever. It was like it was shot correctly to begin with. BUT - I was rendering out a 5 sec clip to test it out, and that took about 15mins on an 8-core Mac Pro mid 2010 with 32GB! An estimate for and hour worth of footage would lead to a week ++ of rendering!
Then I checked out Boris Continuum for CS5/CS6 [ www.borisfx.com/Adobe/bccae/ ] and that gave me the same results as FurnaceCore but with the glory of 64bit processing, so it actually plays back the deflickerd footage in realtime, resulting in normal render times. This is a life saver so I had to share my experience.
I hope this post can help out someone in a similar situation. Would love to see this plugin for FCPX!

Wow, boris is a bit expensive! With FCP7 Phillip Bloom used this 40.00 plugin for flicker removal:
www.chv-plugins.com/cms/Fx-Script/Time-c...on/Long-Exposure.php
Hope it gets updated for FCPX!

Didn't try that one, but boris offers a heap more parameters to tinker with and works with CS6 64bit that allows faster render times.. When you have hours of footage, it would be the deal breaker..
Saw this on Boris blog for FCPX support:
www.borisfx.com/aboutboris/boris-fx-apple-final-cut-pro-x.php
Got this message from boris when I asked about ETA availability for FCPX:
Hi Dan,
No date has been announce for BCC support in FCP X. We will release a press release when there is. Thank you for your patience.
Its in the works!

If you purchase BCC for Adobe Creative Suites you do not get a free upgrade
to BCC for Final Cut X. If you purchase BCC for Final Cut 7 you do qualify
for BCC using Final Cut X.
