MTS Conversion? was created by MatAFilm
There's so many converters to choose from, I was hoping somebody may shed some light as to what the "best" converter for .mts files is. I'm looking for quality over speed, though both would be great.

Also, attached a piece I edited last week for a local art show. All done in FCP X. Hope you dig it.

I think you can test with some for your footage.

FCP 7 offer movie analysis window to see the quality info, but I am not sure if FCP X provides the analysis window.

Since you can edit directly within FCP X, why do you want converter?

You want to edit the vimeo video? It seems a different question from the original poster. Am I getting it wrong?

You can't just pull .mts files into FCP X. They aren't recognized as video clips. There has to be some sort of conversion before the clips can be used. There are many options available, including Smart Converter. I was hoping someone here had experience with this type of conversion and could point me towards a program that would give the best results. Most that I've seen use FFMPEG as their tool, just with different GUI's.

Best,
MF

If you have the AVCHD folder together with the .cpi, .mpl files copied to computer, you can import the .mts files to FCP X. Go to the link below about import AVCHD folder to FCP X.
prores-converter.com/?p=428

If you just have the .mts files, or have not copied the folders, you need conversion from MTS to ProRes, as it is the best for FCP X. There might be related applications on App Store. Just search about converting to ProRes, and have a look at the reviews.

I experienced the same problems, when I tried to read the mts files my Sony CX550 writes to a HDD backup. You can´t import them to FPCX (or FCP7).

I found CLIPWRAP www.divergentmedia.com/divergent on the internet. It´s a small converter that rewraps the mts file into a mov file. There is no quality loss at all and it´s very quick. As long as your sequence is not longer than one minute, you can use the unregistered version.
ClipWrap will also convert into Pro Res 422 (HQ LQ & Proxy) as well as AIC.

That was the only software I found that was able to transcode my mts data without the other subfolders and files. All you need is the pure .mts file.

Hope you get happy with that - like I did!

I don't think thats such a good advice. Unless you want to go back to VHS picture quality. I tried it, and i think its really bad.

Use Smart Converter from MAS. It's free and fast. Just did MTS to Quicktime conversion and to ProRes422 via MPEG Streamclip today and the result is very good.

Hello

Might i suggest the very fine 5dtorgb Batch, available at the Apps Store. Personally i believe its the best one going due to it's feature set and quality output. There is also a lite free version (though not at the same version number) available at rarevision.com/5dtorgb/ .

Regards

Krzysztof

+1 for ClipWrap 2. I use it all the time. It can rewrap single MTS and can also join spanned files into one mov. Great software. Wouldn't be without it.
