Drop Shadow on Text

Had a few problems and crashes whilst applying a drop shadow to a title tonight. It was the 'Basic Lower Third' which was used overlaying a handful of test clips. When I went into the Inspector sometimes the blur & opacity setting were unavailable so I had to reset the parameters and then it would either be ok to reset or on a couple of occasions a crash!

Such issues tend to happen when your system is running short of RAM. It's hard to tell what's causing your specific problem if we don't know what system you are running, nor the format of your test footage. Usually if such problems arise the solution is to quit and relaunch FCP10 to clear its RAM cache.

MacPro 16GB Ram
1080p ProRes
1 mins worth of footage.

After hearing a week or so ago about render files in the projects folder I'm going to restructure the projects folder and put it on another drive rather than being on the system drive like it is now. But with that in mind I shouldn't be having RAM issues with such a small project.

Hi Marc,

No, indeed, with this setup and such a small project you should not have any RAM problems. Are you having the same issue with other titles when you apply a drop shadow or is it just with the Basic Lower Third?

It is a good idea to put both Project and Event folders on an external drive and not keep any media or render files on the system drive.

Yeah I know that regarding the system drive etc.

No this has been a one off problem just strange happening with something so small as a drop shadow:-) I'll test more later and see if it is a recurring problem. Thanks

If it happens again please post back. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem on a similar machine and setup, so I'm interested in what may be causing such a problem.
