moved events/projects unrecognized

I recently had to copy files from one hard drive to an new one. Included were my projects and events from jobs I am working on. The events and projects are no longer recognized by fcpx. I know they're there because I can see them with all the associated media, etc. I have been using Time Machine to back up my work and it doesn't even recognize any of the events or projects on that drive either. Not sure what to do. The work is all there - I just can't access it. When I go to the events & projects on the copied files, it won't let me open them - "the document could not be opened". When I connect another external; drive with events & projects on it , it doesn't recognize them either even though they are recognized by my laptop with fcpx on it. I am running 10.04 as I was previously. Also - Event Manager X recognizes and tries to open my projects. It's just X that doesn't. Wondering if I should reinstall X. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Are they all inside of root level folders called Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects on the external drive?

Yes. I used Time Machine to back them up. When I swapped out the drives, I copied the files using Carbon Cloner to the new drive from the Time Machine back up. All the original media, etc. is there. As I said, Event Manager X recognizes the projects & events, but fcpx doesn't. I can't understand why fcpx on my laptop works with the external drive events & projects, but not my MacPro. They both use the same version of fcpx - 10.04.

Why use Carbon Copy Cloner? You should just drag and drop the folders to the new drive from the backup.

When you connect the drive to your Mac Pro, does it mount on the desktop?

What happens if you double click the "CurrentVersion" file inside of a specific project folder?

Not sure why I went with Carbon Cloner - it just seemed more comprehensive. It doesn't matter as it accomplished the same thing. The drive shows up on the desk top but not in the browser of fcpx. Same with Event Manger X - it's there, but not in X. When I double click CurrentVersion I get the document won't open message.

My BackUp drive doesn't appear in the browser either. X generates a new event when I open it and places it in my back up drive. Nothing else shows at all in the browser. It simply doesn't recognize any of my work.

Do you think I should uninstall X and reinstall it? Not sure else how to handle this. Thanks.

Couldn't hurt to reinstall. It's super easy to do. Very odd behavior.

Yes. Very odd. I reinstalled fcpx and it doesn't make any difference. I copied a job I'm working on to my boot drive (not my first choice) and when I take away the external drive, it finds my events & projects on the boot drive. When I reconnect the external drive, not only doesn't it recognize the projects & files on the external drive, the ones on the boot drive aren't recognized either. I have a feeling this might not be a fcpx problem. I'll have to find a way to work around this.

One thing I've noticed - at no point did fcpx recognize projects & events on my backup drive (via Time Machine). I wouldn't want to work from my backup drive anyway, but shouldn't it be recognized by X?

Out of interest, how was the new drive formatted?

It is a RAID - three 2TB drives RAIDED together (striped) - as before. The reason I copied my files over was that I had a clicking sound that I discovered was coming from one of my drives in that RAID. Before the drive failed on me - and not knowing which one - I decided to start a new RAID with new drives. After I copied the files over, I discovered that fcpx didn't recognize my events & projects. I've also discovered in this process that X doesn't recognize my backup drive as having events or projects even though it clearly does. It seems that I can only back up events and projects via fcpx and if that's the case, then are my other backups really backups? If you can't open them ... as I said before though, my problem may not be an X thing so I have to figure that out before I start blaming Apple.

I just have to add that I noticed that since I have posted so much, I am now listed as an Expert Boarder. The truth is I'm an expert at having problems, not solving them!

Ha ha welcome to the 'expert' club. As to Time Machine, I don't think so. Otherwise FCP X would constantly be trying to decide which project file it should be looking at. From memory Time Machine creates a barrier between it's backups and the Finder.

How did you format the RAID with the Apple Raid Utility or something else?
can you just quickly format one drive, copy the event and project to it and see if it works like that?

I used the Disk Utility. I just received a message I hadn't seen before when trying to open a CurrentVersion on my backup. It says it can't be opened - Projects and Events require read and write permission. I've checked my folders and they are all unlocked. Not sure why I am getting that message. The problem is I have work coming out of my ears so I have to get to it and sleuth this later. Thanks for your help. I'll post if I come up with something.

Something else is going on. I'd never use TimeMachine as my backup, it's hobbiest level backup, and you should use it to extract from. You used Carbon Copy Cloner to extract with, which may not have gotten things out properly. The two should never be used together. Use one or the other exclusively. I prefer CCC as TN runs 24/7 and eats up system resources and has basically not controls.

You extracted from a TM backup with CCC and my feeling is that did something wrong. Delete everything you recovered from your TM backup. Extract what you need properly, don't touch CCC.

If you're RAID is level 1 as it should be, a drive can go bad, you cab replace that 1 drive, you loose nothimg.

Is your RAID external, and if so, what brand?

I personally don't believe in internal RAIDS. Have never soon the benefit for video editing, unless it's hardware based.

Permissions doesn't have to do with a folder being locked, necessarily. TimeMachine holds special permissions to keep it isolated from the rest of the system. Carbon Copy Cloner actually "cloned" those files with that bubble in tact, as Seanus has pointed out.

Delete the stuff you extracted from the TimeMachine backup. Extract it properly. Here are the instructions from the TM user manual. BTW, I've been finding FCP X isn't really TM friendly. I'd strongly recommend you turn it off, and set up Carbon Copy Cloner to do scheduled nightly backups for you. Much more reliable, easier to deal with, super customizable.

==============================

"Restore items backed up with Time Machine
If you use Time Machine to back up your computer, you can easily bring back one or more items you’ve lost, or recover older versions of files you’ve changed.

Open a window for the item you want to restore.
For example, if you accidentally deleted a file from your Documents folder, open the Documents folder. If you want to recover an email message, open your inbox in Mail.

If you’re missing an item from the desktop, you don’t need to open a window.

Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock, or open the Time Machine menu in the menu bar and choose Enter Time Machine.
If you back up to a Time Capsule or other network disk, a message briefly appears while Time Machine connects your computer to the backup disk.

Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through all the snapshots and backups Time Machine created.
Gray tick marks on the timeline represent snapshots stored on your internal drive (portable computers only). Pink tick marks represent backups stored on your backup disk.

If you need more information about an item, double-click to preview it.
The windows in Time Machine behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.

When you find the item you want to restore, select it, and then click Restore. You can restore individual items, multiple items, folders, or your entire hard disk.
The restored item is returned to its original location. For example, if the item was found in the Documents folder, it is returned to the Documents folder. Time Machine may ask if you want to re-create one or more folders in order to return a restored item to its original location.

If an item you restore has the same name as another item on your computer, you’re asked if you want to keep the current item, the restored item, or both.

You can use Time Machine from within many applications. For example, you can open Address Book and then click the Time Machine icon in the Dock to recover contacts you may have accidentally deleted, or open iPhoto and then click the Time Machine icon in the Dock to view past versions of your iPhoto albums.

Thanks for all this. It's very helpful. I've made some boneheaded back-up/restoring decisions and this clears it up a lot. I'll also switch to CCC for backing up. I don't know how I stay in business - oh, that's right, I come here! Thanks again.

The problem has been resolved - or rather, you guys have helped cleaned up my mess. A techie friend of mine describes my approach to technical issues as "deranged problem solving". Thanks again.
