I wonder how far back the dual viewer functionality was planned?

I'd love to know what the assumed new app will be. But it is exciting to watch this really awesome editing app grow so rapidly and with tools that take things in a very evolutionary step.

What's the purpose/concept behind Dual Viewers? I thought they did away with that in FCP7?

FCP7 still has two viewers (the Viewer and the Canvas). In FCPX, you'll get two up viewers in certain situations depending on the tool selected, but primarily FCPX switches on the fly between a viewer and so called Canvas.
Some people prefer to see two views; the previous edit and the current frame you're cutting to. It helps to visualize if the clip cuts are precisely where you want them.
After using FCPX for a while now, I'm getting pretty use to a single viewer, but frankly, I would like to see dual viewers available. It helps if you have monitor real estate to place them on.

Oh yeah, I stated that wrong. I meant to say I thought we seen the last of 2 viewers in FCP7. Anyway, I'm like you, I've gotten use to just one viewer in FCPX. I on the other hand, don't feel the need for 2 viewers, it would seem like a waste of space to me. I mean we currently have 2 viewers when making slip or roll edits right? I'm having a hard time visualizing the purpose in 2 viewers in FCPX. I mean in FCP7 one viewer was for viewing the raw clips while the other was use for viewing the output from the timeline, right? I've grown quite use to how FCPX using the same viewer for both functions. Perhaps I would better understand the need for 2 viewers once I actually seen it in operation.

(added) On the other hand, I would welcome some additional Multichannel Audio Editing Tools!

I for one would welcome the return of dual viewers as I find it quicker to evaluate my next edit when I can see what will come before it at the same time.

The other thing I really liked about the source viewer in FCP 7was the way it became the controls for FX. So think this is the answer, Put the info window on the left of the main viewer instead of the right and have it serve the function of source, info, video and audio.

Yes, there are a lot of uses for dual viewers. In legacy FCP, your Canvas showed the edited sequence (i.e. your timeline at the playhead position). Your viewer showed the current clip you have loaded, and in here you could adjust edit points, filters and keyframes, etc.
Also, legacy FCP had the third view of a full res quick view window, in addition to the dual viewers, since the Canvas was a proxy view, the quick view gave a 10 second full res preview.
On a dual monitor system this was very cool to use.

Don't know if it's semantics, but Larry said "Source and Record", which is not exactly what FCP legacy had. Besides, the Viewer/Canvas system led people to try to do final trims during the rough cut phase, which actually slows the overall editing process down. Also, he says Apple claims they will be doing something very different from what we had before. I was never a huge fan of the Viewer/Canvas system. Ate up too much real estate unnecessarily, and made it very difficult to alter clips directly in the Browser.

I think they'll use a separate window for a ganging function. That feature is completely gone in FCP and is pretty important for dialog editing.

I do hope you are right, Tom. This is indeed a functionality I am missing a lot in this new paradigm. As to the classic Viewer/Canvas concept: I don't miss it at all.

I read it last night interesting features.
Don't really care to much about the dual viewer kinda adopted to the single viewer... but Multichannel Audio Editing Tools, MXF Plug-in and RED camera support definitely in the top ten of my list.
I wonder what he or they mean with another App to join the bunch? Next Logic?
