Outside of directly clicking on it, does anyone know of a way to select a secondary clip? I feel I tend to slow down a bit when I'm trying to cut footage into them and I'd like to avoid it if I can.

You mean a connected clip? Um, cut footage into what?

You can mouse over a clip and hit X to highlight it, if that helps.

You can also hold the Option key to select a clip without moving the playhead.

Agh. I need to floss my head today. (important to practice good mental hygiene!) I meant a connected storyline (always think of them as secondary storylines)

The mouse over + X command seems to do the trick.

I'd been using the "C" key to try to do that without any success and subsequently wound up talking myself into thinking that "X" wouldn't work either.

Thanks you in massive quantities sir!

Same keyboard shortcut that did the same thing in legacy FCP. Very handy, eh? Glad I could help.
