Looks like Marquis' X2Pro tool is finally available in the Mac App store. Supposed to be the savoir for getting stuff out of FCPX and into ProTools. $69 intro price - not bad! Anybody using it yet?

Little steep for such a limited function for me personally. But I wonder if it's AFF is readable by Logic Pro? That might make me buy it.

Wow great to see none the less. This will be such good news for so many people.
It really is the last piece in the jigsaw for me.

It is great. I use PT for higher end audio mixing a lot. But it relies on a Picture Lock scenario, and for faster turnaround stuff I'd much rather stay in FCP-X and be able to apply filters to Roles and have my Waves EQ & Compressor plug-ins within FCPX.

Hi,

I don't have the X2Pro app, but I noticed when I updated from Waves 8 to Waves 9 bundle, they suddenly appaered within FCPX! I'm happy.

Ah superb definitely worth the V9 upgrade then! What bundles / plugs do you have? Do you get the proper Waves interface?

That is exciting! Is it possible to apply an effect to an entire Role group? One of the things I'm still wrapping my head around with the audio in FCPX is how I used to throw everything to a dialog master track and apply stuff that way. How are people working in X? Very curious to know.

You can't at the moment, but if you could in one foul swoop you would completely change the the possibilities. I really hope it happens, it feels like a no-brainer now. This is a wish, not currently reality.

Then the next step IMO would be able to apply 'relative offsets' back to individual clips. Ie. in grading an interview you could apply the look to the master role, but still have local control over vignette positioning to handle subject movement.

Likewise for audio this could be a master EQ & Compression applied to a role but be able to adjust the input level for individual clips to handle extremes of level.

Media Stems have been used for decades for international and national distribution. That's what Roles are for. Not anything else. But, it would be nice to see the abilities of Roles inside a Timeline expand.

You can click on a custom Role, such as "Narration" to highlight all of those clips, select them, put them in a Compound Clip, then apply audio filters and keyframes to the CC as a whole. This is exactly what a "bus" does in a DAW.

Yes, although it does feel the original use for roles is diminished with updated XML. Your idea for applying filters via compound clips is something I haven't thought of, but in trying to visualise it I think I'd still be stuck with picture lock for dialogue, which is what I want to avoid by staying in FCP-X. In a picture lock scenario Pro Tools still appeals most for audio mix.

How did the updated XML "diminish" anything?

But, you can export Media Stems according to Roles. That gives you QT files that are all the exact length of the Timeline, but with only that media with that roll. Thus, it's all in sync. I actually do that to take SOT, Narration, SFX, Music, Ambient, etc, to Logic Pro for complex mixing. It's not OMF or AFF or XML, but it works to a good degree.

One of the really great things about this is that your Role names translate to ProTools. No more emailing lists of track descriptions to audio engineers.
