Archive & Truncate?

Archive & Truncate? was created by funkpost
I have some footage…A LOT actually. But now I'm done with my editing, and I want to archive my project + media (events). But I don't want all the unused media, only the used clips, and only the portions (+/- 10 seconds) of what is actually used and showed in the project.

How do I do that? FCPX's archive function stores not only the portion of the clips that has been used, but the hole clip.

Example: I have a 20 min clip from which I've used 2 minutes in the middle. I don't need the other 18 minutes anymore. How do I "truncate" my events like that?

Thanks!

Duplicating a Project gives the option of creating a new event with only used clips. But nothing in FCP X trims actual clips... yet...

While not always practical, the best bet at this time is to trim clips before bringing them into a project via Quictime, P2CMS (for P2 data) or some other program. I, too have projects stored that contain long clips that have only had portions of them used....hopefully this will be addressed in a future update.

With P2 you can trim them when you import them, only importing the segment you want, no need for external software. True for any non-QT media imported with "Import From Camera" option.

You can select a range and import just that range. Do it over and over to select multiple ranges of a clip. Very easy, directly from mounted card.

If you've copied the P2 card contents whole and in tact to a folder on a drive, use Open Archive to point to it.

Import Files is for cameras that record .mov files. Import From Camera is for cameras that do not create .mov files.

And I am importing from various DSLR cameras. So I my case, I should actually preview and select my footage in Quicktime (?), and export the portions I need.

And as for my existing footage - nothing to do about it?

Off course, if I leave all my media for now and Apple decides to implement some sort of tool for this, I can always get rid of the un-used footage by then. The real question is then: Will Apple ever make somthing like this? (is it possible in FCP 7?)

Thanks

P2 is Panasonic's proprietary solid state media used in various cameras such as the HVX200, HPX-170, and higher end models. It is a very robust medium for capturing HD at 100Mbps and DV.

BenB's suggestion would work for you as well. Import from camera and select the portions you want. Optionally, you can load them into quicktime after import and trim them, but it seems to be more practical to do it upon import.

For footage you already have imported, the QT trimming is one way around your issue. Load them, trim them, discard what you don't want.
