Yeah, that was probably me. :(

"I don't see there being an easy automated process available in Chronosync to exclude the original source file..."

CCC does everything you just asked for.

CarbonCopyCloner has very flexible "backup" routines that can be scheduled or manual. You can specify what specific folders get backed up. It is about the best around and I highly recommend it. It can also do Append backups, so that only data that has changed since the last backup is processed, making the backup process even faster, if desired. You can even create multiple schedules to backup different things to/from different places at different times.

It's most recent update now includes a "newbies" setting so that any change or deleted files since the last backup are moved to an Archive until it's safe to delete them permanently. This archive can be pruned.

It can use a folder on a drive for backups, rather than dedicating a whole drive for backups.

It now backs up the Lion Recovery HD hidden partition, to and from non-HFS+ partitions, network volumes, "Cloning Coach" so you don't lose anything, and more.

Very advanced, very powerful, very safe, very flexible, and in my professional opinion (as an IT engineer) the absolute best on the market. And free! But give the dude a donation, he has worked for a decade on this, and puts a LOT into it!

Like the site says, "Clone, Synchronize, Schedule, Backup"!

I use CrashPlan for automated backup to two "geo-redundant" locations.
One is my dad's home, where a second RAID is sitting, the second location is CrashPlan online.

So far I am very satisfied, but I've only backed up around 3 TB.
