Going from FCPX to DaVinci - what to do? was created by BloodyCuts.co.uk
Hi guys, I have another question....
So I'm editing a short film in FCPX for the first time, and once I've locked the edit I want to go out to DaVinci Resolve Lite for finishing. However, I'm editing at 2k (it was shot on Red Epic at 5k) and the Lite version of DaVinci doesn't support anything over 1920x1080.
With that in mind, what would you do, if in my situation? (buying the full version of DaVinci isn't an option, by the way
)
Thanks for the help.

Well, no where near as robust as DaVinci, but I believe Yanobox Moods will allow you to color grade some 4K footage. By default it is limited to 2K but I am pretty sure you can set the prefs for 4K. It's a pretty reasonably priced package.
EDIT: here is the link to it on this forum if you want to check it out.

Thanks for the help. I actually haven't used Color before, though I do have a fair idea on how to use it. For me, it's better to spend my time on DaVinci, rather than discontinued product. If Color was still being supported, I would have definitely have made the effort to use it.
Yanobox Moods looks great, but would I be just as well to colour correct with FCPX's own controls?

Perhaps...but I prefer the onscreen controls and find Yanobox to be a bit more intuitive to me. You'll still want to check the 4K issue you originally posted about. I couldn't find specifics on Yanobox's website, but I can actually check my program when I have a chance to confirm it will handle them.

I'd rather use a piece of software that isn't supported anymore than nothing at all. EOL doesn't mean it breaks all in a sudden.
I know folks who still use Shake.

Good point. One can ususally tell when the app is no longer able to keep up with the OS of the day, and then it might be time to consider changing.

I still use Color a lot. This week I took on 2 grading projects I'll do in Color. Although both are being delivered as FCP 7 projects to me. Color is still a very valid stand alone professional app.

Since the OP wants to use Davinci lite, this is what I would try. Keep in mind that you have to finish in HD. That's why it's FREE. If you want to color in 4k, spend the $995 to get the full version.
You can change your sequence settings in FCPX after the fact to 1080 and it will resize the clips for you. You can check though your timeline for framing and make sure it's good.
Now, I don't know whether sending from FCPX as a 1080 timeline will work and I suspect not. But what you can do is use RedCineX (you said you shot on the Epic, right?) and re-transcode the clips you've used to 1080. First, I would move the clips out of wherever they are, and then re-transcode to the same location (keeping the same clip names). When you next launch FCPX, it SHOULD reconnect to the new sized media (at least that is what it did for me). If it doesn't you can use the new media reconnect tool to reconnect your stuff.
Then send to Davinci! (And that part I am less familiar with).
Good luck and would love to see the results when you are done!
