Retiming only a section of a clip

I've got a 10 second long clip that i want to retime a little bit at certain parts. i want it to be 100% at the beginning, then vamp to 50%, then to 100%, then to 50%, then to 150% then to 100%

I know the long and annoying way would be to just cut up the clip with the razor tool and retime each section, but i don't want to do that. I want to be able to add different retiming bars on the one clip just like it does when you go to Speed Ramp. it makes several different speed retiming bars over one clip, it doesn't cut that clip up into separate pieces.

Take the range selection tool R and drag the selection you want to slow down. You can also use In and Out points. With the selection made go to retiming and change the speed.

If you set a range on a clip and set the retiming to 50, 25 100% etc. (to the right of the tool bar above the browsers) it only adjusts the section between he range, then you can fine tune by dragging on that section in the retiming editor (opens in the timeline) if desired.

perfect!

I was trying to select a range then press Command R to bring up the retiming and that wasn't doing it. So you have go to select the Retime button instead.

This seems like a bug that'll need to be fixed with an update, considering the button you press has the hotkey Command R next to it when you highlight over it, but you get different results from pressing the button and from hitting Command R.

⌘R is just the keyboard shortcut to show or hide the retime editor, After spending a bit of time with it I'm ok with the operation, but I'd also like to see some further work done at some time down the line.

Yeah, me too like some kind of indication that a clip has time changes on it without having to open the retime editor for the specific clip, or every clip in the project to identify which ones have timing changes applied... unless I'm missing something?

Good catch. Apparently Apple fixed this with 10.0.3? I just started using X at that version and I don't have that problem.

It still works the way it used to Ron. Brady was trying to hit ⌘R to apply a retiming, when all it does is show/hide the retime editor. You still then need to apply it.

Which is good, as if retiming has been done on a clip, ⌘R shows/hides it, rather than making further undesired adjustments.

Oh, okay my bad, I suppose I misunderstood the problem. Thanks Dave.

The biggest addition to retiming that I would like to see is to not have the retimed clip ripple the timeline at all.
After all Apple finally added this feature to FCP7 then took it away in FCPX.

The reason is that there are times that I might have a clip that is on an almost finished primary storyline that doesn't see to fit exactly (start and stop) where I need tit to be. So all I want to do is slightly adjust the speed of the clip (speed up or slow down) to fit exactly as I need it to. Currently to do this I have to have the clip as a connected clip adjust the speed and trim accordingly. This way it doesn't ripple the primary storyline at all.

It would be nice if I could do this in the primary storyline as opposed to as a connected clip.

Couple of ways. I usually just lift it out of the primary with Shift-Cmd-Up, adjust the speed, trim it, and drop it back in. You can also adjust the speed, ripple it back, and then slip it however you want.

Tom that's exactly how I do it now.
But it would be nice if one could adjust the speed without the clip extending. Then one could simply slide it as needed, never leaving the primary storyline. Just would like to lose the extra steps of lifting from storyline, adjust speed, trim, slide, and move back to primary storyline.

We had this issue with retiming at first in legacy FCP, then Apple fixed it. I'm sure we'll see the same ripple controls coming in X. But fill out those feedback pages!

I've made an effect for Final Cut Pro X that gives you a Final Cut Pro 7-style remapping graph control.

It works with up to 20 seconds of a clip - so if you have a three minute clip to work with, use the standard time remap command to speed it up to 20 seconds before applying the effect (you can slow the clip back down with the graph control and get access to all the source frames from the three minute clip).

You have to set the first and last keyframe, but you never get any rippling!
