Anyone finding any differences in either Optimizing media on ingest to actually rendering in the timeline? I take it when optimized in ingest then FCPX replaces the original media with ProRes in the location specified?
And also if I where to use proxy media I do do the edit in that format then export final project to say ProRes as a finished movie. So after that what you do with the proxy media if you have already backed up the original rushes to another drive? If needed the original rushes would link to the project that the proxies where used in.
I know basic question but never used proxy media before.

Use proxy while editing. When done editing, switch back to original or optimized media, output.
To archive, you can delete your proxies, everything will relink to the original media, you can even create new proxies if you need to edit more.
I have been using proxies on everything that has more than 3 camera angles. It makes editing really quick.

Thanks
Yeah I was testing out how far I could push FCPX and only had 4 instances of iPhone footage and one GoPro and it really stated to slow down.
So when you copy your media to the selected folder in the Events folder and choose proxy it just down converts the original media in that folder. So then you just put a copy of the original media off the SD cards to another location as backup. I'm just concerned that I don't down convert and lose the original media.

You should always back up your media. But when you create proxies. In your event folders through finder. You will have and original media folder (weather you make proxies or not), if you make optimized or proxy media it will create 2 new folders one for each.
You only work with proxy media once it's been created and you switch it in your FCPX preferences. (just a note about working with proxy media, once you switch VIDEO that does not have a proxy file it will show up as offline)

Thanks
I've got all that now after realising the folder structure inside the Event folder:-)
One thing I'm glad you brought up was the fact of changing the prefs to 'playback proxy media' I just assumed that if I chose 'create proxy media' when importing that it would be the default of FCPX to edit in that mode. I didn't realise I had to set it in FCPX prefs! I've been getting crashes and spinning beachball's every 5mins whilst playing around with multicam editing and thought it was some GoPro HD2 footage that was in one of the tracks. Turns out that 'use original media' was ticked which was giving FCPX a hard time...well I hope that is what the problem was.
Thanks for that I'll see how I go now.

I had I question about proxy media. If you use the proxy to edit with I'm assuming Ann the color grading and effects happen to the proxy media and is much faster than working on original media. Once you are done editing and you want to export as a video, are all of the effects now proccessed on the original media? That seems like a long render time if you have to all of this on export.

Working with proxies speeds up the editing process and that's exactly what you should use it for. It has nothing to do with FCP10 itself, it just puts lets strain on your system resources while you edit. But once you start grading or applying filters it is preferred not to work with the proxies anymore but to switch back to original media. Because color grades and certain effects, especially the ones that add blurs or glows, might look different on Proxies than on your original media due to the different resolution.
But even if you do your grading and your effects on the proxies as well it is correct that the effects will be applied to the original media once you switch back to export at full quality. This will not require any more rendering or processing than if you had done everything on the original media.
