But while I was checking I noticed another problem. If I make the title long enough to go off the edge of the screen, then reposition, it doesn't show what was outside the screen. It just moves it over showing half a letter cut off and nothing after.
If I reposition then type it treats where the edge used to be as the edge, even though it's now somewhere on screen.

Obviously I don't want to use the transform tool because the texts exits off screen so you'd see the false line.
Is there a solution?

The standard version of 'Overlap' has keyframes that say 'start here' 'By this point in time, move here' for the build in phase and 'Be here at this point in time' and 'move elsewhere' keyframe at the end of the template timeline.
Moving a text element of a title in Final Cut Pro 10.0.3 and later adds a keyframe at that point. This means that the text will move from it's resting position to your new position and back again by the end of the clip.
My modified version of 'Overlap' uses behaviours: 'Move from a specific co-ordinate off the screen to a resting position' and 'Move from your resting position to a specific co-ordinate off the screen.' That means the position parameter for the text element has no keyframes. This means that moving the element doesn't add a new keyframe - where you move it to becomes its new 'resting position'

Yes I've opened it up in Motion to get at the parameters I needed. Hopefully there's a fix for this soon. Don't want to use Motion all the time for these things.
