It used to be so simple in FCP 7- set an in and out on the timeline and check the top left of the record window.
Can't for the life of me see how to do this in this version though? What am I missing? It is there right? right?

To see the duration of a clip select it and hit "ctrl-d", the duration shows up in the tool bar display.
I had thought that selecting "Shift" multiple clips and doing this showed the total duration, but when checking before posting it seems not. Maybe this changed on an update or maybe I remember wrong.
Using the "Range Selection" tool, "R" you can set a range on the timeline, the duration will show up as you drag. But it will also be displayed if you hit "ctrl-d" and if you have snapping on you can set multiple clips easily.

You can select I/O, select a range, select contiguous or even a group of non-contiguous clips and the duration of the selections will appear at the bottom of the timeline.

Excellent, thanks Tom. I never noticed that before, no messing with "ctrl-d"

Also doesn't the timeline list to the left display the durations of all the shots?

Unless theres a way to change what is being displayed that I haven't noticed the timeline index only shows the position of any clips/transitions etc. but if selected in there the display below the timeline updates to show the duration(s).

Ah thanks for that. Didn't have FCP X handy.
Also it shows the duration in the inspector window. Can't remember if it did pre 10.0.3 or not.
I don't suppose there is an easy way to see the source timecode by any chance?

It's not the most elegant solution, hopefully someone will have something else, but this works.
You need to have "Show Skimmer Info" enabled "ctrl-y", then remembering the skimmer takes priority over the playhead (it works for both) hit "Shift-f" or right click/menu to "Reveal in Event Browser". The skimmer info pop up appears showing the source timecode in the "Event Browser".
