effects before color correction?

More

whenever an effect is added to a clip it shows at the top of the inspector, which to me means that it is processed first. I would think the "color" should come first. Am I wrong in thinking that the effects is processed first and if so is there a way to to add effects after besides making a template and using it in "corrections"?

thank you,

Yes effects are processed before color correction. Only way to do it other way, as far I know, is to make your color corrections to clip -> turn clip to compound clip -> add effects to compound clip.

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a benefit to have effects process first besides if you have your own coloring program? It seems like there should be an option to insert effects before and after color correction.

I guess it might make some sense to have color correction last in FCPX because it's working totally in 32-bit floating and can create 'super whites and blacks' and many effects clamp these colors to basic levels... Of course it'd be nice to have choices. BTW this the reason why you can't use for example broadcast safe effect straight in clips because it doesn't affect color corrections that process after broadcast safe. So you have to use compound clip technique or adjustment layers.

It's normal to do color grading first, as effects you add will through off the clip's original color to start with. Normally we do color grading last, after everything else is locked down.

ok, I see there are many different ways to do this. so for example, I could de-noise first, magic bullet looks second, and then color correct third. the only thing that seems weird is that I would think white balancing would come before magic bulllet. would it be overkill to get colorista to use after de-nosiing and them also color correct at the end? or is it not as big of a deal where the white balance occurs.

thank you,

Magic Bullet and Colorista are in fact color correction/grading. If you used either, seems redundant to be using the color correction brick.

oh ok, sorry about that. I guess from my questions you can tell that I am a bit of a noob. One last question, I come from a background in music editing and usually after I do a mix, I make a new project file for the master. In video editing once you do all of the color correcting and effects to all the the scenes, do you then add a layer in order to put either a film grain or a final effect over the whole project? or do you export the video to make one file that you would add to a new project to do the final effects for the whole video.

thanks again!

The color grading is the final process. It's where you create your final look. You do it shot by shot, scene by scene. It's not like mixing music.

This thread brings me an important question. I don't yet own Magic Bullet for FCPX so can't check myself.

If I do my basic colour work with the colour board then finish off using magic bullet to get the looks I'm after will it apply the magic bullet effect before the colour work? I really hope not.

You'd do one or the other, not both. Using both would be a total waste of time. They both do color grading, period. Just pick which one you want to use.

I've worked with Magic Bullet a lot on other platforms for a long time, doing both is not just a waist of time.

I choose to use colour correction tools within an NLE to do my basic grading, then magic bullet to finish it off.

Does anyone know if FCPX would apply the Magic Bullet effect before the colour board grade?

according to this video you can make a preset in Motion and add it as a correction. The only thing is it seems you would have to go back and forth a lot to edit the look instead of it being a plugin in fcpx.

I don't see him making any presets in Motion. He does make an FCP X color correction custom preset, but that's inside FCP X.

I'm assuming the look he inserts is from a preset made outside of FCPX. I definitely could be wrong.

Yes, there are the Looks presets, too.

I watched that set of video's before, I love his no messing straight to the point presentational style.

What he's doing is what I'm talking about. balancing his shots on correction 1 then finishing off on correction 2, It's a pretty standard way to work. What I like to do is balance my shots with Avid/Premiere and now FCPX's colour tools then finish them off with Magic Bullet applied on top.

Corrections in FCPX are applied on top of each other, so correction 2 can be applied on top of correction 1 in a way that it looks like Magic Bullet can't. What I'm looking for is conformation, perhaps the guys at Red Giant worked round this as it's essential to the process.

If not heres a workaround that comes from something that is automatic in the Avid workflow. Balance all your shots then create individual compound clips of them all, this can be done without losing transitions. Now magic bullet should be able to be applied to the compound clips and stepping into them can access any previous effects or the colour board adjustments if necessary.

I don't see why this shouldn't work, but if anyone using MB finds different or see's that it works different and there's no need I'd love to here.

MB and all the other third party looks touch every part of the colour structure, I see little point in doing anything with balance/luma etc before their use. I would check for legal limits post use and that would be that.

Had a look athe the Video fromm CGC. I understand what is happening there and agree wholeheartedly with the workflow. However, as the process doesn't involve any third party apps it's moot in the context of this thread a wee bit.
