Hello everyone!

I've been having a recurring problem with FCPX lately, it has been some weeks now, the program keeps crashing quite frequently. I am not that sure that the problem is related to hardware ressources (I work on a M1 Ultra, 64 Go Mac Studio), and I've read that it could be linked to a corrupted preference file, and that I have to delete it. Could someone explain me if that should be the way to go (I updated Mac OS Ventura yesterday), and what I am gonna lose if I delete that preference file? Is it related to the shortcuts, or is it deeper like personnalized titles, generators, etc?

Also, if that doesn't work, am I gonna need to delete and reinstall FCPX? Does that procedure deletes the same things I mentioned before, or do I keep them?

Thanks for your help on the matter!

Deleting the preferences simply returns FCP to the condition it was when it was first installed.

Custom effects, titles and generators are stored separately in your Movies/Motion Templates folder so should be unaffected by either deleting preferences or deleting FCP itself.

To delete the preferences hold down he Option and Command keys as you launch FCP until a window appears asking if you wish to delete them.

Click the Delete button.

FCP will open with no project so you will have to navigate to the project you were working on.

After every crash you should delete the FCP preferences.

You can use the free app Preference Manager to save your good preferences (when FCP is working well) so that after you have deleted corrupt ones you can replace them with good ones.

Alternatively, when FCP is working well you can go to your Home Library/Preferences and copy the good preferences . . . com.apple.FinalCut.plist . . . . to your desktop and after trashing the preferences you can replace them with the saved ones.

...I updated Mac OS Ventura yesterday...

Do NOT update to the latest version of FCP, which is 10.6.7.  Do NOT have the Mac App Store app set to "automatic updates".

As a standard procedure, before updating FCP, *always* zip the "Final Cut Pro.app" bundle in the /Applications folder to save a copy of that. Doing so lets you revert to the previous version if needed.

Ideally, all your libraries should be "lean libraries", IOW all media, proxies, cache, etc. are external. If so, it is trivial to make file-level backups of your libraries by duplicating those with Finder. In case an FCP update automatically updates the library when you open it, this saves a copy of your library in the previous state.

If the libraries contain media, they are often too large to duplicate. FCP automatically saves "lean" copies of the libraries, by default in /Movies/Final Cut Backups, so you can duplicate that entire folder to save a copy of all the library backups. That's in case you open an auto-backup without thinking, FCP updates it to the new version, then you can't go back.

Yes, as already stated, deleting FCP preferences is easy, safe and fast, and that may solve various problems.
